Never has there been a campsite more aptly named. It took this reviewer 20 minutes and two phone calls to find the place, despite the satnav indicating that I was around 200 metres away. Persevere, though, and the determined camper is rewarded with a brilliant little piece of England to call their own. Our tip is to look out for the sign for Moor Lane Nursery as, rather sweetly, the day-to-day business here is growing and selling gorgeous plants.

What this means is that the whole place is beautifully designed, with stunning plants at every turn. A stroll through the site is a revelation, revealing nooks and crannies peppered with comfy chairs, a barbecue, picnic tables and a wishing well along with essential amenities such as a fridge-freezer, microwave, kettle and so on. Its proximity to Croyde Beach means that it’s a favoured hangout of the surf crowd but, thanks to its tranquil, private vibe, it attracts the more chilled variety of surfer. There’s unspoilt countryside in every direction and you’ll share your stay with butterflies, owls, egrets, bats and dragonflies (plus the lovely Steve and family – this is their home and they'll be on hand to accommodate in any way). Back to nature, then, but with the bonus of the lively village of Croyde just down the road.

This family run campsite is set on level ground away from the main road running into Saunton and Croyde. It's the owners own home - called Secret Spot Camping as there are no signs or roadside clues. Pre-booking online is essential. Based in Devon and near Saunton it's the perfect place to getaway and relax by the seaside! The campsite boasts beautiful flower gardens which attract birds, butterflies, dragonflies and bees. The Camping Fields looks across open farmland on all sides and to the back of the Saunton Sand Dunes to the West. Onsite there are proper flushing toilets, free electric showers and a communal fire pit area adjacent to the Campers Kitchen. The communal kitchen has washing up facilities, fridges, freezer, microwave, electric kettle and a toaster. There are tables and chairs and comfy sofas etc. and the Campers kitchen is open 24 hrs too which is the perfect setup for chilling out in the evenings. The gardens have various seating areas so you can make a cup of tea and go slt and relax and enjoy the beautiful flowers and scenery.  An added bonus is the well stocked Village Stores nearby (Pixie Dell Stores) and it's also an easy stroll into Braunton with its many excellent Restaurants and shops - including of course the famous Squires Fish and Chip Shop! Pizza is also available delivered on slte. Saunton and Croyde Beaches are just down the road and it's an ideal location to explore Braunton Burrows, Crow Point and The Great Field.  The Host's - Steve & Jo live on slte of course as lts their own home. Both are proper locals and do everything they can to look after their Guests and help them enjoy the wonderful things this area offers. (Steve offers free advice on the local beaches and all things surfing). They even have their own Surf Shop in Croyde which s now run by their Son Sam.  (Croyde Surf Shop - the pink one!)

Based near Saunton in Devon, Secret Spot Camping is a small, family-run campsite. It is the owners own home - they do not wish to be over run so there are no signs etc. to attract passing trade. Booking Online is the only option. Once booked, campers are sent directions - it's actually not far at all from the main road however unmarked and hidden from sight! - It's the perfect place to getaway and relax yet close to the beaches of Saunton, Croyde and Putsborough. - The Campsite itself has beautiful gardens, butterflies and birds. It overlooks fields to the back of Saunton Sand Dunes. It is a 15 minute stroll into Braunton but transport is better for the short hop to the Beach. The atmosphere is relaxed and laid back, the perfect place to chill out and forget about the modern world!
Nearby attractions
The Sandy/Surf Beaches of Saunton Sands, Croyde and Putsborough are just along the road.. all with plenty of Surf School options. A little further afield the lovely sandy beaches of Woolacombe Sands and Westward Ho! There are great walks to the deserted (even in summer) far end of Saunton Beach (Crow Point). There is excellent flat Cycling around Braunton Marshes and The Tarka Trail. On our doorstep there is the wonderful Dunescape of Braunton Burrows - This area of Special Scientific Interest is a Biosphere Reserve which covers 4 square miles of Sand Dunes! It contains many rare species of plant life, wild foxes and deer, and is rich in nature and history. (World War 2 - Assault Training for D-Day). It's a great place to explore and you can walk for miles and hardly see a soul even at the height of Summer! There are also many other places to visit.. Ilfracombe & Lundy Island, Exmoor, Clovelly to name but a few..  There are also many Devon Cream Teas to be sampled - Cream on First!
Food and drink
Nearby Braunton has become quite a "Foodies" Paradise!T here are two excellent Fish & Chips shops .  Squires (01271 815533) brings folk from miles around, both for its Takeaway and it's Sit-Down Restaurant. South16 has recently won awards too. Wild Thyme and Riverside do excellent Breakfasts. There are several Restaurants, At One, Riverside and SQ spring to mind. There are Seven Pubs which all serve food and most have Live Music. In Croyde Village of course there is The Thatch (01271 890349) - possibly the most famous pub in Devon along with Billy Budd's and The Manor. Braunton also has 2 Chinese & 1 Indian Takeaway plus the largest Supermarket in the area (Tesco's). There are several Surf Shops although none as good as Croyde Surf Shop (The Little Pink Shop) -01271890453 where there is a large selection of New & Secondhand Surfboards & Wetsuits. You can also pre-book a large selection of Surf Hire equipment www.croyde-surf-hire.co.uk
