Adults-only glamping pods on a 500-acre farm beside the beautiful Blackwater Estuary

The Binder family have been cultivating pods at their farm on the Essex coast for a long time. But, until now, you couldn’t stay in one. While the two luxury glamping pods they are offering to guests are new, this farming family has been growing peas, and other arable crops, on their 500-acre farm here for three generations. It makes for an ever-changing and peaceful patchwork of fields that will be much enjoyed and little disturbed by the grown-up glampers it aims to attract.

This image of rural bliss is only half the story though and the clue to the rest is in the name; Southey Creek Glamping. It’s just a short walk across the fields until you can see the peaceful waters of Southey Creek and the Blackwater Estuary on the east Essex coast. Watch for a while and you’ll see the rusty red sails of old Thames Barges plying the waterways. If you follow the seawall for a couple of miles, you’ll reach the nearby town of Maldon; rich with maritime history and home to pubs and independent shops and eateries where you can refuel before meandering back the site. If you wish for something a little different, there are many events happening in Maldon Promenade Park and around the local area throughout the year.

The two glamping pods at Southey Creek Glamping have identical facilities like, well, two peas in a pod. Each is self contained with an en-suite shower and toilet, a little equipped kitchenette and a made-up bed with linen and towels provided. They are neat little glamping units with all the facilities of a self-catering cottage in miniature. They're insulated and heated, so as to provide a cosy cocoon when it’s cold, but it’s what’s outdoors that sets them apart and there’s seating and a barbecue provided to help you enjoy it.

There’s plenty of birdlife on the farm and in the wider area with pheasants, kestrels, woodpeckers, cuckoos and owls often seen on the site and wading birds out in the estuary. Guests are welcome to explore the farm on private, marked footpaths and public byways. The walk into Maldon is a must and, if you’ve got your sea legs, a trip on a Thames Barge is highly recommended. If not,  If not, just enjoy looking at them moored up while enjoying a glass of something refreshing at the quayside Queen’s Head. It was at this pub that the tradition of the town’s most-famous event, the Maldon Mud Race where contenders sprint, slip and slide across 500-metres of the river bed, was born. Further afield (but not far) are many more interesting attractions: the New Hall Vineyard, the Tiptree Jam Museum and the RHS gardens at Hyde Hall. Plenty of laid back attractions for grown-up glampers.

The pod was perfect. Everything we needed was in there. Very easy to find also. The setting was beautiful and so secluded. I wish I had more than one night there. So perfect and quiet. Julie the host was very helpful with emails and how to get here. I've recommended to my friebds to visit.

Sun, sea and scenery- what a pod!
Julie’s glamping pods are incredible! Fully fitted out with everything you can think of! The location is perfect with being in a quiet location but with a beautiful walk in either direction to civilisation! Having two pods only really allowed for us to fully relax on our own but we will be back with friends next time! For a break away in a beautiful location in a wonderful pod with a fabulous host this will not disappoint!

Marsh Harrier pod
Where do I start? We arrived at Southey Creek Glamping, (which is super easy to find) and Julie - the host- welcomed us with a smile and a quick chat, making us feel at home immediately. The pod is the best I have ever seen amongst my glamping experiences ! Love the en suite bathroom and the fact that the pod has everything you need, a fridge freezer, a little oven and hobs as well as a bbq! I don't think it could've been any cleaner, which is really a huge plus for me. It's a perfect spot if you just want to recharge after a tough week and only listen to the sound of nature. The towns nearby are lovely, very quiet and with good food. There are several pubs and plenty of places to shop for food. Julie is fantastic, you know that she is around the corner if you need her but at the same time you won't see her ever (unless you call her of course ! ). I will definitely return !!!

Our 2 beautiful wooden Glamping Pods (Oyster Catcher and Marsh Harrier) are nestled on our arable farm in the Essex countryside. Our pods sleep 2 adults. They are fully equipped with everything you need for a fantastic holiday all year round (fully insulated), including a cosy bed, kitchenette (microwave oven, 2 x ring ceramic hob, fridge with freezer compartment), kettle, toaster, complimentary tea, milk and coffee, Tassimo coffee machine, Wi-Fi, comfy sofa and an outside BBQ and seating area. You have your own en-suite private shower and toilet facilities. Take in the views over the farm and go for a short walk to watch the famous old Thames Barges and boats sailing along the River Blackwater. Sit and relax and enjoy the peace whilst watching the world go by and experience all the lovely things that are just on our doorstep. Enjoy the sound of the Cuckoo, the sight of the Kestrel, Owls and other animals, birds and fauna, taste the delicious blackberries and breathe in the smell of fresh air. Be amazed by the stunning night sky on a clear night with a spectacle of stars! We are only 2.5 miles away from the market town of Maldon and 11 miles away from bustling Chelmsford. Our family run 400 acre arable farm is located in Mundon, Essex. The farm has been in the family for 3 generations. We grow many different crops though mainly Wheat, Peas and Oil Seed Rape. During the Spring and Summer there are patchworks of colours spread across the fields to enjoy. We are also growing a new crop - 'vines' in our new 2.5 acre vineyard. In a few years we should have our first wine. We have planted a combination of Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and Bacchus.
Nearby attractions

The farm is on the edge of the village of Mundon where there’s a pub, a listed church and a “petrified” oak forest. You can walk two and a half miles into the historic maritime town of Maldon where there are lots of shops, cafés and a couple of museums. The big attraction is Hythe Quay where distinctive red-sailed Thames Barges offer trips along the River Blackwater. There are also lots of annual events here including the well-known Maldon Mud Race, usually held in late spring. New Hall vineyard (01621 828343) is just three miles from site in the village of Purleigh and offers guided tours and tasting. There is also a Museum of Power, five miles away at Langdon (01621 843183), and the Royal Horticultural Society’s garden at Hyde Hall (01245 402113), nine miles from Southey Creek Glamping and the Tiptree Jam Museum and tea room (01621 815407), 11 miles away (because you can't have a jam museum without having a good tea rooms with it too).

Food and drink

You can pre-order breakfast and barbecue packages full of local produce to be in your pod on arrival (extra cost). The closest pub is The White Horse in Mundon (01621 740276) an easy countryside stroll away. There are lots of places to eat, drink and buy supplies in Maldon, under three miles away, including a choice of two micropubs which both brew their own beers, the Farmers Yard (01234 567890) and The Mighty Oak (01621 843713), and The Queens Head, which offers a seasonal menu and views of passing barges. The Bell in Purleigh (three miles away; 01621 828348) is another recommended pub serving food and there’s a lovely little community shop there with heaps of local produce. For a cream tea, where better than the tea rooms at the Tiptree Jam Museum?
