An off-grid yurt in a private woodland between the Lakes and the Dales

This glamping site between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, is as enchanting as the name suggests. A single yurt stands in a clearing between the trees of a four-acre wood. In spring it's chock full of bluebells. In summer it's awash with colour. And wildlife visits throughout the year. There are leafy walkways through trees to the pond, which attracts everything from dragonflies to deer, and there’s a summerhouse, a jetty, and a hammock where you can relax. Best of all you get the whole place to yourselves, with just the single yurt on the entire site.

The yurt in question offers self-contained accommodation for two. It has a made-up double bed, a cosy seating area, a simple kitchenette, and a connected bathroom cabin. It’s well kitted-out but off grid and rustically lovely. That means heat is from the log burner, limited electricity is from solar power, and water comes via 25-litre containers that you need to fill up outside. The toilet is composting and the shower requires you to warm your own water in the kettle on your gas stove. It’s a simple, sustainable way to stay that requires you to slow down a little. And as you do so, you’ll be able to take in all the details that make this place as aesthetically friendly as it is environmentally.

The pleasing clad of the kitchen is made of reclaimed pallet wood, the bed posts and bedside tables are straight from the woodland outside, the bathroom is built from larch from nearby Windermere. And that, of course, is Fairy Bell Wood’s other advantage. It’s near Windermere. It’s also near Kendal, Sedbergh, and the Howgill Hills, with magnificent views of the fells. It’s situated in a sliver of land that connects England’s most-loved national parks and, as such, is a great place to base yourself to to explore both the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales and everything that’s in between.

Watch the sun go down over the Lakeland Fells from Cumfrey yurt within the tranquillity of Fairy Bell Wood; nestled between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks. The yurt sits in its own private clearing within native woodland. Wander through the glades and sit by the pond to soak up the peace and tranquillity, keeping eyes and ears open for the local wildlife. Off- grid, spacious, insulated yurt with double bed and king size duvet for extra comfort! (All bedding and towels provided). There is a well equipped kitchen with a double gas hob and small fridge (cool-box in winter), also a wood burner for those chilly evenings (logs provided). Lights, fridge and shower are powered by solar panels, there are also USB charge points to keep phones and tablets charged up. Attached bathroom with COMPOST TOILET and shower. Water for the shower needs to be heated on the hob first, then just flick a switch to pump the water through the shower head. Outdoor seating is provided including table and chairs and hammock; perfect for watching those summer sunsets and stunning views across to the fells of the Lake District. There is also a fire pit with grill and pots and pans. Cumfrey yurt sits in a clearing within Fairy Bell Wood, four acres of native woodland with a large wildlife pond with a summerhouse. Guests are free to wander around the paths and use the summerhouse. The yurt has a COMPOST TOILET. It is empty and clean for each stay. The path from the car park to the yurt can be wet and muddy, please bring suitable footwear. If arriving after dark, please bring torches as it can be pitch black; great for star gazing though!

Perfect!
We spent two nights at the yurt for a little weekend whilst we had some rare days off together. Everything about it was perfect. The yurt is incredibly well looked after and decorated beautifully, and incredibly cosy with the log fire on. The actual land itself is so quiet and out the way, and being in the woods with noone else around is just an added bonus. We couldn't have asked for a better place and can't wait to go back (preferably when the blue bells are out!). We didn't need anything from Ste as everything was really obvious, but he was quick to respond when we forgot to empty the cool box when we left (there were some good beers in that box!). Thank you!

Glamping with the animals
Beautiful spot hidden in the lakes. Fantastic scenery all around with easy access to the dales way and other footpaths. Very cozy and homely inside with great facilities. Will definitely stay again 😁

Beautiful, secluded yurt with stunning views across the countryside. You really felt like you were in your own little oasis. We had plenty of firewood and amenities to keep us going whilst we were there so had no need to contact the hosts. Would highly recommend

Nearby attractions

Fairy Bell Wood is situated six miles from Kendal, the gateway to the Lake District National Park and it’s half that distance from the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park (three miles). Walking, cycling and outdoor adventure opportunities abound and start from the front door of your yurt. Lambrigg Fell rises up behind the house and the Dales Way, long distance footpath, passes close by. Both are great options for local walks and an OS Map is provided in the yurt. Bowness-on-Windermere is 15 miles from site and the closest place to reach the shores of England’s largest lake. From there you can get out on the water by hopping aboard a lake cruiser or hiring your own boat. In the other direction, the market town of Sedbergh (eight miles) within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, is a nice place for a mooch about with lots of bookshops and cafes. It’s also a good starting place for a walk into the Howgill Fells.

Food and drink

Kendal is just a 10-minute drive (six miles) from Fairy Bell Wood and is the place to head to if you want to stock up to cook back on site. It has both independent shops and supermarkets to choose from. There are also a good range of cafes, coffee shops, pubs and restaurants with the tapas at Comida recommended by your hosts. Sedbergh (8 miles) is the closest place to head for a good country pub. Choose between the restaurant-style food at The Black Bull, which has both tasting and a la carte menus, and The Dalesman Inn which has a good menu which focuses on locally-sourced produce. For your own farm-fresh ingredients, you could drive the 11 miles to Low Sizergh Barn Farm Shop. There’s a cafe there too.
