Camping and glamping in the Lincolnshire Fenland with campfires, alpacas and a positive vibe

Do you fancy an old-fashioned camping holiday with a campfire? Or to stay aboard an American schoolbus? Do you want to spend more time outdoors and for your holidays to be in tune with nature rather than at odds with it? Then the advice of the owners at Big Sky Hideaway is to say yes more – and to head on over to their glamping site in the Lincolnshire Fens. It’s the latest project of the adventurer, motivational speaker and community-organiser Dave Cornthwaite and his wife Emms. This inspirational pair exude positive energy and have set up Big Sky Hideaway as a place to share it by providing escapes in nature which are powered by renewable energy.

Out on their 14-acre patch of flat Lincolnshire fenland, you can pitch your own tent or stay in one of their glamping pads. There’s a refurbed double decker called the Yes Bus, an American Schoolbus, a bell tent and a pair of Landpods which are modern, purpose-built camping cabins. Each offers space to hang out, a comfy place to lay your head and cooking facilities too. On the buses, that’s included inside by way of a small but well-equipped kitchenette and at the Landpods, you’ll have access to a more rustic field kitchen.

Rustic is the right word here when it comes to the other facilities too. There are composting toilets and simple shower cubicles dotted about. And whether you’re camping or glamping here, you’ll have a fire pit provided as the campfire is an important part of the Big Sky experience; encouraging you to spend more time outdoors. To that end, there are also woodland walks and a small herd of alpacas which you can help to feed, for a small extra fee.

In case you haven’t picked up on it, “saying yes more” is the philosophy of campsite owners Dave and Emms. It’s also the basis of the YesTribe, a community Dave founded, inspired by the kindness of strangers he met on travels around the world. Should you want to say yes to your own adventures around their new basecamp, you’ll find the flat country lanes are perfect for walks and gentle bike rides under the big skies that this landscape reveals. The River Witham is a couple of miles from site, the market town of Boston, six miles away, and the wildlife-rich Lincolnshire Coast is a few miles beyond that, it’s marshy nature reserves closest to site with big sandy beaches further north. But are they worth the drive? You can probably guess the answer.

The Landpod Nest
Unique. Perfectly, unique.
We've never stayed in another place like it. The Nest is surrounded by trees and bushes and you wouldn't know it's part of a bigger site. We loved the privacy but then the option to walk to the barn each morning and evening. It was great having our own field kitchen and firepit, and the stay ticked off everything we hoped for: rest, escape, phone-free time and a unique experience we'll remember for a long time.

Lotus Belle Tent
"Say YES"
The belle tent was incredible. It was so nice not to have to construct/deconstruct the tent and have some home amenities ready. Both hosts were excellent and incredibly accommodating. The land was the perfect place to switch off from the world and reset.

Double Decker with Alpaca Views
Say YES to the Yes Bus!!
The bus was absolutely incredible! Such a joyous space to enjoy. The whole campsite was lovely with woodland areas to walk and Alpacas to see. The barn was great with ping pong, good drink choices and fab pizzas on Saturday nights. Dave and Em were so welcoming and friendly! It was great to make memories with the family and I think it might become an annual trip to the big blue bus!

From the host
Treat yourself to time away in a peaceful hideaway beneath the big skies of Lincolnshire. The Big Sky Hideaway is a camping and glamping farm with a difference. From the moment you turn off the road and head down our track you’ll feel like you’re escaping day-to-day stresses, and that’s exactly how we like it. Whether you choose to stay on one of our gorgeous converted buses, tuck yourself away in the woodland in one of three very cool Landpods, hang out in our hammock village or simply decide to gift your tent a private patch of fluffy grass in our camping meadow, you’ll be greeted with a smile and a feeling of renewed optimism. Little signs dotted around the site offer happy reminders of the best things in life: good friends, kindness and a dash of adventure. The whole site is powered by renewable energy and a sense of community. Oh, and did we mention our alpacas? Giggle as they frolic around their garden without a care in the world. We really can’t wait to welcome you for your next holiday. As our motto goes: say yes more!

Big Sky is out in the countryside just six miles west of the market town of Boston. There are walks straight from site, including a four-mile round trip to the River Witham. Alternatively, head in to town and board the Boston Belle (07595 045387) for a river cruise or out to sea to see seals. The closest stretch of the Lincolnshire Coast, 10 miles from site and just beyond Boston, is on The Wash, which is internationally renowned for wildlife and birdwatching. You can visit RSPB Frampton Marsh to see what you can spot and learn more. For beaches, head further north to Skegness and beyond. About 30 miles from site are the quieter beaches of Anderby Creek and Mablethorpe. One of the closest attractions to site is the quirky and nostalgic little Bubblecar Museum, just three miles down the road (open weekends and bank holidays only). The Ark Wildlife park is 12 miles away and usually a hit with kids.

Food and drink

For shops, supplies and a choice of places to eat out, head into Boston, a 10-minute drive away. There is a market there every Wednesday and Saturday morning too. The closest place to eat out is Witham and Blues (01205 280546), a riverside American diner, two miles from site or, in the other direction, there's The Wheatsheaf Bar and Grill (01205 290347) at Hubbert's Bridge.
