Off-grid pitches and campfires on a lovely little campsite in rural Dorset

On the edge of the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Little Hundreds Campsite is a simple summer site on a farm that seems to delight all who visit. Welcoming hosts, clean facilities, and great views all help keep campers happy. But smiles are enhanced by a few more unusual extras too: a wall of sunflowers, the chance to feed the friendly neighbouring sheep, and posies of flowers in the loos. The location is not bad either. It’s a mile from the nearest good pub, a mile from the closest farm shop, and five miles from the National Trust’s Kingston Lacy Estate. And if you fancy a trip to the beach, Dorset’s Jurassic Coast is close enough for a visit.

You can pitch where you please and park up next to your tent in the south-facing, five-acre field that makes up Little Hundreds Campsite. It’s an easy going place to stay that relies on campers’ good sense and a few sensible rules. There’s a low noise policy with quiet time after 10pm, campfires and barbecues are allowed but must be kept off the ground, and dogs are welcome as long as they are kept on the lead. It all makes for a lovely place to pitch up and the facilities, though simple, have been lovingly handcrafted and are kept beautifully clean. The site may be off grid, but you can still charge phones at the solar charging station and there’s an ice pack-freezing service courtesy of your hosts, the amiable Katie and Dudley.

They also provide a few bales as a rustic play area which are a big hit with the kids. If you can drag yours off them, you can head out to visit the nearby market town of Blandford Forum or, perhaps, to Kingston Lacy. This grand family home, together with its gardens and grounds, provide a great place for a day out complete with a National Trust cafe and gift shop, of course. There’s great walking on the Stour Valley Way and great cycling on quiet country lanes. In fact, it’s directly on the 80-mile Bath-to-Bournemouth cycle route, so makes a fantastic place for serious cyclists to stop off too. The beaches, bays, and fossils of Dorset’s Jurassic Coast are also only a half-hour drive away.

Pitches are off grid and for tents only, situated in our tree-lined five-acre field with access to three toilets and two hot-water showers.

Relaxing escape at Little Hundreds
We had a wonderful and relaxing time at Little Hundreds Farm Campsite. Dudley was very friendly and accommodating. Facilities were clean and showers were very refreshing with a feeling of being outdoors in the simple wooden enclosure. Kids loved playing in the open field and enjoyed the hammock and neighbouring sheep. Perfect as a base for our 5 day visit to the area!

Little Hundreds Farm
We spent three days at Little Hundreds campsite. A small campsite but with plenty of space, lots of distance between tents and you can pitch where you want. So quiet, relaxed, and peaceful. The toilets and showers were clean, and enough low light to guide you at night. Dudley was friendly and helpful, and came around most evenings with camp firewood and firepits. Exactly the sort of place we were after.

Weekend camping in the countryside.
A lovely stay in peaceful surroundings, we loved the campsite which had great facilities and plenty of room. The onsite toilets and wash areas were great and added a little touch of luxury to our camping experience. The campsite was really relaxing and in a beautiful area. Definitely recommended!

Top Drawer Campsite!
Fantastic one-night stay at Little Hundreds- we should have stayed longer! Probably the best toilet and shower facilities we've ever had at a campsite; the showers in particular are a highlight with hot water and plenty of water pressure. The toilets are chemical loos but built into three really lovely cabins that are furnished with nice smellies and flowers like any toilet in an upscale hotel. Dudley was available at the end of the phone and came to see us in the evening to see if we'd found everything ok and to drop off a huge bag of firewood for only a fiver! The site itself is a large field with long-ish grass and plenty of space around the edges. There were about 10 other pitches when we were there but it never feels crowded and never had to queue for the facilities. We'll be recommending Little Hundreds to everyone we know looking for a few nights away in the area. P.S Don't be put off by a lack of reviews; they're new to HipCamp but you can find more feedback on Google or Pitchup.

Super chill family camping
Really lovely (new to Hipcamp but search around on the web and you'll see they've been going a little while and have plenty of glowing reviews) campsite. It's small - just one field but its really intimate and in a beautiful spot in the Stour valley. The owners are really attentive - they keep all the facilities spotlessly clean and are always at the end of the phone if you need more firewood etc.

Nearby attractions

Little Hundreds Campsite is close to the Stour Valley Way and other footpaths which make it an excellent place to explore on foot. It’s also directly on the Sustrans Bath-to-Bournemouth cycle route. Badbury Rings, an Iron Age Hillfort, is three miles away and is another nice place for a walk – with added historical interest and fantastic views. The National Trust’s Kingston Lacy is a grand family home, styled as a Venetian palace within beautiful gardens and parkland, five miles from site. The Georgian market town of Blandford Forum is also five miles away, it has a market on Thursdays and Saturdays. The closest place to reach the coast is Poole Harbour, 10 miles south with Bournemouth’s beaches to the east (16 miles from site) and the Jurassic Coast stretching away to the west. Kimmeridge Bay and Lulworth Cove (19 miles) are both about a half an hour drive from the campsite.

Food and drink

There are two good farm shops near Little Hundreds Campsite: the well-stocked Rawston Farm Butchery and Shop (three miles) and Marcia’s Farm Shop (just over a mile) which is a pleasant walk away and has a cafe too. The closest pub, The Anchor Inn is a community-owned place in Shapwick, just over a mile away. There’s a pleasant hour-long circular walking route from the campsite which passes by or you can drive there in a few minutes. The Langton Arms at Tarrant Monkton (six miles away) is another pub in the area which serves locally-sourced food – and there are plenty of options in Blandford Forum (five miles). The town is also home to the closest supermarkets, a range of independent shops and has a market every Thursday and Saturday.
