Once crowded with seafaring merchants importing
French wines and Scandinavian fish, the bustling streets of King's Lynn drew
crowds from across the country. The green edges of this maritime metropolis
seemed the perfect place for wealthy William Gurney to build his grand mansion. But as sailing boats dwindled and the crowds began to fade, his illustrious
home was torn down leaving only its extensive grounds. Centuries later,
medieval streets and charming quaysides are the towns centrepiece once again and while
Silly Willy may have demolished his home, we campers can doth our cap to what’s
been left behind; a grassy parkland and an ideal setting for a family campsite.
Capitalising on this prized position in the village of Runcton is
King's Lynn Caravanning & Camping Park, a pleasant site, dotted with
century-old trees and equipped for every kind of camper. Tent-pitchers and
van-parkers will love the generously-sized spaces, while the hedgerows that
border each of the three fields help add extra shelter. Those hoping for a few
more creature comforts can hire one of the eight luxury pods, fitted with
heaters, fridges, microwave and a kettle, along with comfortable double beds and
a folding sofa bed (allowing four people to sleep with ease). All of the pods and
pitches share the two heated sanitary blocks, built to top eco-friendly standards
and kept spotlessly clean.
It’s a short trip from the campsite into town
and, while the history of King's Lynn has left elegant Georgian buildings, a
pleasant waterfront and a couple of good museums, the site is also well poised
for trips to the North Norfolk Coast and The Fens. A host of fantastic nature
reserves are on the doorstep and some of Norfolk’s best beaches are well within half an hour's drive. Speedy access to this wealth of attractions is down to the
nearby A47 and if you’re not used to traffic noise it’s best to steer clear of
the field nearest the road. Elsewhere, the sounds of chirping birds
dominates and the tranquility of the campsite creates an escape from that everyday hum.
Whether you’re a family spending days on
the beach, couples touring the quaint flint villages or a full-scale rally
staying in the spacious extra field, King's Lynn Caravanning & Camping Park
balances top location with a welcoming atmosphere. It's an easy place
to settle down and bask in the satisfaction of simply being on holiday. Sit back,
relax and browse through the folder of local recommendations, taking your pick of the endless places to go.
