A farmer’s field for self-sufficient campers in Cranborne Chase

Wild camping with the thumbs up from a friendly farmer is what you get at South Allenford Farm. This is a stripped-back campsite if ever we saw one – perfect for a spot of back-to-basics camping. There’s no shower or even a loo here so it’s appropriate for those who have a campervan with on-board facilities or tent campers with their own portable toilets only. There’s something elemental about what is provided though; fresh air, fire pits and water. Plus, a free-form pitch in a huge field in the beautiful Cranborne Chase countryside, not far from the New Forest National Park.

Farmer Digby will give you details of how to reach this simple but special spot on his sprawling farm. If he’s got time, he’ll meet you too. Then you, and the few other campers who are allowed at a time, are given the freedom to choose where to pitch within a grassy field. Cows and horses often graze in the surrounding fields, deer and hares are often spotted and kestrels and buzzards fly overhead. This is laid-back life in the countryside where a stroll to the local pub or a morning fishing in the river are great ways to spend your time.

Further afield, you can head into the New Forest for yet more wildlife spotting, horse riding or cycling. And there are plenty of man-made attractions too: pretty villages and towns within the national park and closer by in Cranborne Chase: Damerham is the nearest, Rockborne is not much further and the city of Salisbury is just over 10 miles from here.

Pitch your tents or park your campervan freely in our large grassy meadow with access to fire pits. Located next to a large forest perfect for exploring and games. The farmhouse is across a hundred acre field so privacy won’t be an issue! The site is perfect for any type of camper and is surrounded by beautiful scenery.

Triangle lush meadow
Beautiful, secluded spot (we had the luxury of the field to ourselves in November, with cattle and horses as neighbours, alongside owl, pheasants and more. Pleasant walk across the fields and bridleway to the pub. F having a fire was beautiful in November. Fully recommend

peaceful stay!
we stayed on Digbys land and had the most perfect & peaceful stay. On arrival Digby came and met us at the location, although the field we had actually booked wasn’t available he had an alternative that he kindly shows us too.. it was beautiful & more than we could have hoped for!

Very peaceful spot
A very peaceful and remote spot. Hares and Kestrel in the field. Note you drive up the path which says footpath which is counterintuitive. Thankfully Digby met us at the gate and showed us in which was very helpful.

Absolutely perfect
Very nice location, no others, we had the whole meadow to our selves. Only a lot of friendly cows as visitors. We loves this location and would definitely stay there again!

Unless you have a tent don’t bother
the plot that we booked on hipcamp was not actually available when we got there! They sent us down a track which was totally unsuitable and was just a dead end with only room to turn around with very soft ground for a heavy van! They had to tow us out with a tractor Then they sent us down another track which again was unsuitable for our van which caused our bumper to be ripped off !! And unless we camped right in the middle of the track there was nowhere to set up camp! This ruined our last day on holiday as we had to waste time getting the van towed out and find another campsite so we lost a whole day! Not only this but We now have to pay for a new bumper!! I was then only offered a partial refund as he had to take time off work to tow us out!! Shocking!!!

Nearby attractions

South Allenford Farm is in the Cranbourne Chase National Landscape, an area of outstanding natural beauty in Hampshire, close to the border with Wiltshire. It’s a lovely place for walking with plenty of tracks around the farm that you’re welcome to follow and the River Allen and woodland nearby. Then, of course, there's the New Forest National Park which is just beyond Fordingbridge (three miles) with plenty more walking, wildlife spotting, cycling, horse riding and attractions to visit. The closest village  Damerham (one mile) offers a trout fishery on the river with day tickets available. There’s another fishery in Rockbourne (two miles) too as well as the remains of a Roman villa and a small museum. There’s another historic site at Breamore House, an Elizabethan manor house and gardens (open on selected days only). Salisbury, with its impressive cathedral and the excellent Salisbury Museum, is just over 10 miles away and from there Stonehenge is another 10 miles.

Food and drink

It’s just over a mile to The Compasses Inn, a well-rated country pub in the pretty village of Damerham. You’ll find the nearest shop there too. For more than that, head for the town of Fordingbridge (three miles) where the high street offers options for eating out and stocking up supplies for campsite cooking. Perhaps try The George for a riverside meal.
