Classic, simple, farm camping for families near the Quantock Hills

For many, Splatt Farm Gardens represents camping as it’s supposed to be—low on price and big on spending quality time with your loved ones. Located in Somerset, just east of the Quantock Hills, Splatt is laid-back place where kids can run free, while adults sit around the campfire. Nearby days out range from sunny beach trips (15 minutes by car) to exploring bustling Bridgewater (10 minutes) or Taunton (20 minutes), while days staying put on the campsite, kicking a ball about or clambering on the climbing frame are just as fun.

There's a solid five acres of space for campers. It's flat, has good views, and enjoys a part of Somerset with wonderfully dark skies. The facilities are eco-friendly, including compost toilets and an outdoor solar shower that lets you bathe with a view. There's also a clutch of fun things for kids, like the giant trampoline, climbing frame, and slide. Ultimately, though, what you see is what you get at Splatt Farm. There's nothing too high tech or fancy. And there are also no additional charges—if you want to bring your dog, have a campfire, or set up a gazebo, go ahead (there is an on-site farm shop, though, for proper extras, including "fairy dust" that can be sprinkled on your fire for some multi-coloured magic).

You'll have fantastic views towards the Quantock Hills from your pitch. Take your wellies for an adventure through its wooded combes or hiking boots for the Macmillan Way. If you want to know more about why this is such a beloved part of the world, there's the Museum of Somerset in Taunton, located within the town's 12th-century castle. The place is full of history and the little village the campsite edges, Spaxton, dates back to the Doomsday book. The pub there, the Lamb Inn, is around a 20-minute walk from your pitch and does a good range in classic pies.

We are all about sustainability and as such, we're developing our very own vegetable garden. All of our planting is no-dig and focuses on replenishment of soil health and nourishment; we have a focus on increasing biodiversity and doing our little bit to slow climate change and are currently working with the council to diversify the grasses, plant additional hedgerows and create more ponds. Since opening in 2020, we have planted around 550 trees, grown a variety of over 50 different vegetables, supplied our family and friends and sold surplus to local places: the community shop in Spaxton, Blackmore Farm and the Foxy Bean Cafe. Somerset has lots of surprises waiting to be discovered. As one of the larger English counties, Somerset has stunning beaches, green countryside, woodlands, lakes & more, covering a wide range of landscapes & environments. There’s so much to explore in this wonderful county, that even those lucky enough to live in Somerset are continually discovering its gems; wildflower meadows, beach waterfalls, ancient wells, unique carvings & underground reservoirs. These hidden gems can be found in addition to the well-known landmarks of Somerset, such as Glastonbury, Cheddar Gorge, Wells Cathedral or Exmoor, which have secrets of their own to be explored. Think of Somerset & what comes to mind? For some it is the stunning views across open countryside, others the fun to be had on its sandy beaches, or maybe it’s the superb strawberries, Cheddar cheese & cider? Our county is famous for the Glastonbury Festival, carnivals, Mulberry handbags & Arthurian legends, but there’s much more to be discovered!

Super peaceful
Absolute heaven! We did have the place practically to ourselves but believe it would be peaceful even when at capacity. Compost loo and wash up station were really handy. The gardens and fields were a lovely view to have!

So pretty
Well sign posted with a helpful voicemail message explaining everything. 😊 Each pitch is perfectly spaced each with their own firepit. Amanda was so lovely and friendly. My daughter loved exploring the field and quickly found the children's slide and trampoline.

Had an absolutely lovely time at Splatt Farm Camping Gardens and we will definitely be back hopefully with a few friends in tow. Peaceful and quiet and clean site and great little pitches; and our 5 year old loved the chickens and playing on the trampoline!

Starry skies, peace & a compost loo
We spent one night on Amanda’s land. It’s a small back-to-basics site. There are chickens and beehives and a trampoline in the centre of the site. The compost loo was great - clean and not at all smelly. There’s a solar-powered shower too. The pitches are very clearly set out. It’s really peaceful. Starry skies. We’d give it 4/5. If there’d been more people camping the single loo may have had longer queues. There’s no one on site to direct you so we relied on the website to find out the rules and missed the additional rules displayed in the loo when we first arrived.

Lovely natural campsite!
Gorgeous site with big vegetable patch and roaming chickens who come and say hello. Lovely large and fairly private pitches (-would help if they were named or numbered!) carved out of long grasses. Simple clean compost loo, sink for washing up and completely open cold(?) shower (only stayed one night so didn’t use) basic facilities but perfect for such a natural setting.

Tranquil camping
It's in a beautiful spot, very tranquil and good stargazing too! Plenty of fee pitches when we visited. Soft grass for tents so good sleeping! Interesting productive veg garden too. The whole ethos of the place is good and I hope they develop it more in the coming years. Definitely worth a return visit, or several.

Deep in rural Somerset, Splatt Farm Gardens is a spacious meadow campsite with fabulous views of the Quantock Hills. It's a place where you can come to relax, connect with nature and enjoy the peace of the rural countryside. For our younger guests (and those who are young at heart) we also have a 14ft trampoline, climbing frame and slide and plenty of space to explore and play games. Campfires are encouraged and you can also buy magical fairy dust onsite to make your fire into a rainbow of flames, all just around the corner from the beautiful Quantock Hills and all of the attractions that Somerset has to offer. You will also notice on site that we have minimum lighting on site to prevent light pollution, which means that we have spectacular night skies for star and bat gazing! On a clear night, you might even catch a glimpse of the milky way.... The team at Splatt Farm Gardens are on a mission to spread peace and happiness throughout the world whilst promoting sustainability and connection to nature. It's strongly encouraged for guests to sit back, relax, switch off from screens and technology and reconnect to a simpler life. You will often find Amanda and the rest of the family sitting around campfires, chatting to guests, hearing their stories and asking people what makes them smile in life! Unfortunately, the site is not suitable for caravans or camper vans as there is no hardstanding and there is a risk of getting stuck in the mud after rain.
Nearby attractions

You can reach the heart of the Quantock Hills in a 15-minute drive, with the site situated along its outskirts. A designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, here you can explore a lesser-known part of the Jurassic Coast by popping to Kilve Beach, where you can go fossil-hunting or take a scenic walk along its cliffs, all the way to the nearby Quantoxhead Beach that can be reached in a pleasant 10-minute walk. Hestercombe House and Gardens is a 20-minute drive away, encompassing three centuries of garden history across a beautiful 50 acres of parkland. This is an excellent place to unwind, with there also being a number of health and wellbeing events running throughout the year, from free exercise classes to book sales.

Food and drink

The Lamb Inn is the nearest pub, less than a five-minute drive or a 20-minute walk away. Tucked away opposite swathes of countryside, it's very homely inside, with beamed ceilings and a cosy wood-burning stove. Classic pub food is served here along with some sizeable steaks, and you're welcome to bring your dog along, too. Head into Bridgwater for a number of places to eat and drink, including the popular Wild Rocket restaurant and cocktail bar. There's plenty on the menu here whether you're visiting for dinner, lunch, or breakfast, from homemade burgers to a cracking Sunday lunch, and their cocktail selection is ample. Bookings are advised (01278 238770).
