A modern, eco-friendly, A-frame hideaway on the edge of the South Downs

This sustainably-built A-Frame sits within a flower farm in the foothills of the South Downs National Park. From south-west London, you can reach the Hazel Hide in about 90 minutes so it’s an ideal place for a weekend away – but we can’t quite decide who it’s best suited for. Sitting in the middle of English wine country it’s a fabulous base for a grown-up getaway. But at the same time, the two bedrooms, space to run wild, and proximity to the seaside make it perfect for families.

Standing alone in seven acres, it’s fair to say that Hazel Hide is not a place to make new friends. Instead, it's somewhere to escape to and enjoy the company of those you’ve come with. And, that can include the dog (at an extra cost). It’s a great place for them, in fact, with plenty of good walks across the surrounding countryside and up in the South Downs National Park, where there are views all the way to sea. That’s the other attraction of this part of rural Sussex – you’re never too far from the coast. On hot days, you can head for a dip in the sea at Worthing. On blustery ones, go for a mooch around Brighton, a 30-minute drive from here.

Equally appealing are days spent right here at your A-Frame cabin in the countryside. It’s a modern space with a light and airy super-height apex over the living area. On hot days you can open the bi-fold doors to let the outside in. On colder ones, the place is well warmed by its log burner. It’s off grid – but you wouldn’t know it with an electricity supply for its stylish kitchenette and USB charging points powered by solar panels. One bedroom sits high on a mezzanine with spectacular countryside views, the other is tucked away downstairs next to a modern bathroom. Both can be fashioned as twin rooms or doubles with generously-sized king-sized beds. The reason we couldn’t quite put our finger on who this place is best suited to is thanks in part to the flexibility of the space. This modern eco-friendly accommodation is not only suited to couples or to families – it's one of those rare places that works equally well for both.

There are two bedrooms – one upstairs and one downstairs. Both can be made into two single beds or one king-size bed. Downstairs, there’s a bright and modern bathroom with a hot shower, toilet, and sink. But the highlight of the downstairs is the light and airy living area. During summer months, push back the bi-fold doors for seamless access to the large, field-facing deck and laze on the outdoor hammock. In the winter, light the cosy woodburning stove (highly efficient and DEFRA approved), which fills the cabin with warmth. The living area has a small contemporary kitchen with a gas-powered hob, oven, fridge, and all essential utensils. We’re proud to harness the energy from solar panels for 100% of The Hazel Hide’s electricity requirements. We have a back-up generator, but have never needed it. USB ports are available for charging phones, tablets etc, but please be aware that there are no standard plug sockets to power other appliances. The wood-burning stove provides all of the cabin's heat when required. Guest access As a guest of The Hazel Hide, you’ll have access to the whole flower field and woodland area. It’s the only cabin in the field, so the space is completely yours to enjoy. On select dates throughout the year, pickers may be farming the flowers; however, the cabin is a distance from the flower-growing area. Parking is free in the field with the walk from the hard surface parking area to the cabin being approx 100m. In wet weather, we advise bringing appropriate footwear to cross the grass.

Luxury Eco A-Frame Cabin
Starry nights …
We enjoyed an extremely peaceful and restful stay at Hazel Hide … So many thoughtful touches and felt as though Kate & Duncan were there welcoming us in person as they had predicted our every need! Our pup enjoyed running around in the long grass … we were able to let her roam free without the worry or stress of traffic or other guests. It was raining for the majority of our stay, which meant we got to snuggle up by the wood burner and enjoy some much needed relaxation. We were able to have a bbq when the rain paused and enjoyed a great take away from the recommended curry house. Our pup took much convincing to get into the car to return home … as did we! Thanks for a great stay and the gift to take home :-)

Luxury Eco A-Frame Cabin
Fantastic location. So relaxing to just roam the meadow knowing it’s secure for the dogs. We were guessing the wildlife tracks through the field each morning. The cabin is beautiful and the hosts are obviously passionate about making this a special stay for guests. Welcome pack was much appreciated. My little boy loved the treasure hunt on his last night to find the take-home gift in the secret cupboard! Could have stayed much longer to work through all the books and games.

Luxury Eco A-Frame Cabin
Couldn’t ask for a better stay!
My boyfriend and I LOVED our stay here. You can tell that Kate and Duncan put a lot effort to making us feel very welcomed. There was bread, milk and tea. Also the best part was welcome brownies which we devoured!! There was nothing we needed to query as all the information was there. For an eco-cabin stay, it was very modern living with a very rustic feel. We loved the wood burner whilst playing board games or reading a book. It made just for very cosy nights!! We also brought our chihuahua with us who loved all the open space. (Also the showers are very HOT which is something you wouldn’t think possible in the middle of the field...) We also took the recommendation to get a take out at Curry Lounge which was divine. 10/10 recommend the Hazel Hide. Would definitely come back in the Summer. Thanks!!

Luxury Eco A-Frame Cabin
Wonderful stay!!!
GORGEOUS stay at The Hazel Hide. It's so tucked away and you're surrounded by acres of space. It feels really secluded and special, the cabin has been furnished and decorated to a really high standard and we had the most amazing time with our family. We brought our 7 month old baby and were (mostly) lucky with the weather. Sit back on the hammock and relax and watch the sun go down. We'll be back, thank you so much!

Luxury Eco A-Frame Cabin
Off grid living - luxury glamping.
A beautiful A-Frame cabin situated within a large green open field. A great escape away from the everyday hustle and bustle of London city life. Loved the concept of the build with its eco-friendly touches. The Welcome to the Cabin book informed us further about the hard work, skill and passion that was put into creating this beautiful build. The cabin is a work art with a beautiful interior design, colour scheme and creative touches, giving it a homely personal touch. The diverse collection of books kept us so absorbed and the games made our stay even more competitive and entertaining in the evening. We enjoyed the nearby walks and drives around the countryside with friendly locals who guided us in the right direction on our walks. My husband and I were blown away by the beauty of the cabin as it was well laid out, organised, cosy and clean with plenty of natural light coming through the large windows. There were beautiful landscapes seen through the windows of the upper level. The big bi-fold doors were a bonus which made our stay feel like we were more outdoors but yet when indoors the cool breeze and sunshine beamed down on the earthy wooden decking. We enjoyed making breakfast in the kitchen area and set up the table and chairs on the decking area to enjoy our delicious breakfast with the sounds of nature whilst sipping our tea. The host was very helpful with good instructions. The cabin had everything we needed. We enjoyed our stay at the Hazel Hide. Nisha & Jay.

The Hazel Hide is a sustainably built A-frame cabin set on a secluded 7 acres and nestled in the foothills of the South Downs National Park. Architecturally designed, the cosy cabin features two bedrooms and a mezzanine with views of the rolling Sussex countryside. Local vineyards, including Nyetimber, Wiston Estate, and Kinsbrook, are close by, or if you fancy the buzz of a city, Brighton is a 30-minute drive.
Nearby attractions

The Hazel Hide is situated close to the village of Ashington in Sussex, just a mile from the edge of the South Downs National Park. There’s great walking in the countryside where this Hipcamp is situated, or you can head up on to the Downs to walk, cycle or even horseride on the well sign-posted South Downs Way National Trail. Chanctonbury Ring, a circle of trees on the site of a prehistoric hillfort and a Roman religious site, is a good high point to head for, offering views of surrounding countryside and all the way to the sea. Should you wish to visit the seaside, Worthing is the closest place to head for, 12 miles away, and bustling Brighton with all its attractions is a 30-minute drive away. Closer to the Hazel Hide, there are a number of vineyards in the area including Kinsbrook, four miles, Nyetimber, five miles, and Wiston, six miles from site. Kinsbrook and Wiston offer tours and tastings, Nyetimber has occasional open days.

Food and drink

Ashington village (almost three miles by car, but just a mile across the fields) is home to both the closest local shops, which includes a Co-op, and the closest place to eat out: The Red Lion pub, which comes recommended. You can also order takeaways from Ashington Curry Lounge for delivery to the farm gate. There's a lovely tea room, Joanna's, in Storrington and two of the nearby vineyards boast eateries. And at Kinsbrook, there’s a farm shop as well as a farmhouse eatery where you can enjoy a laid-back lunch with paired wines. Over at Wiston, The Chalk Restaurant offers a full seasonal menu each day with dinners on Friday and Saturdays too.
