A pair of self-contained glamping getaways in Wiltshire

Hare’s Rest and The Hoot are two romantic hideaways in the Wiltshire countryside: one a charming shepherd’s hut, the other a vintage horse lorry that’s been converted for glamping stays. Their peaceful setting in countryside that’s famous for white chalk horses on grassy hillsides may make you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere – but there’s actually lots to do. The Somerset village of Frome is a few miles in one direction, Bradford-on-Avon in another – and just beyond is Bath on the edge of the Cotswolds. Then there’s Wookey Hole, Salisbury, Longleat and Stonehenge, all within 30 miles from here. Whether you visit any of them is another matter. You may be just as content to relax and read books, to cook on the campfire, to soak up the scenery and to watch the visiting wildlife.

These two countryside boltholes are positioned in a two-acre paddock with plenty of space between them. The closest neighbours are the hares and hooting owls that inspired the names of these glamping retreats and there’s other wildlife too: deer, buzzards and red kites. There’s a chance of spotting all of these as you barbecue and eat al fresco in the private outdoor space of Hare’s Rest or The Hoot. Inside, each has its own facilities and is fully kitted out for self-catering stays. Beds are made, towels and logs are provided and there’s even a welcome hamper for you on arrival.

While the standards inside are the same (tip top), the two accommodations definitely have their own charm. Hare’s Rest is a purpose-built shepherd’s hut with white-washed walls that make it feel light and airy while The Hoot’s cosier vibe is thanks to a raised bed and the warmth of the original natural wood interior. Whichever tempts you more, this place is great as somewhere to hideaway in or to explore the area from. Dogs are welcome and log burners in both mean they are great for year-round stays.

Lovely, surprisingly secluded site with all the facilities needed for a break. Perfectly sited to watch the sunrise and sunset.

Hare's Rest Romantic Shepherd
Sitting in someone's garden.
Overall we had a good experience. However from the description I thought we were going to be a lot more private. There are houses just at the back. You're not away in a field, you're in someone's garden, there's no escaping that. And suburban, small gardens, not grand mansions grounds. On top of which the two units are too close together. Sitting on our chairs we could see and hear the other one. The guests there were either never in or very quiet, so it wasn't a problem (a part from looking at a horse van instead of fields) but it could have been pretty bad. You're led to believe, from the photos, that it's an isolated idyll. That is very much not the case.

The perfect way to escape the 9-5
Staying at the Hares Rest was amazing. We thoroughly enjoying staying in the shepherds hut. It was about 2-5 degrees the whole time we stayed, but the heated fan and log burner were ample to keep the whole place warm. Ruth was an amazing host. There was the most wonderful hamper left for us. With fresh bread, cakes, biscuits, hot chocolate, marshmallows, homemade jam, buttter, eggs and milk. We did not expect this and it was a lovely suprise. The hut is about 20 minutes from Bath by car which is great for hiking the local hills and walking round the city centre. Ruth was fast to respond to queries and only a message or phone call away. All in all a very pleasant glamping trip. We would definitely return.

Hare's Rest Romantic Shepherd
The perfect glamping getaway!
We enjoyed a wonderful stay at Ruth and Partner's lodge. The Shepherds hut is built and finished beautifully as-well as fantastically equipped. From towels to cooking gear, and crockery to fire wood...Its all there perfectly available and clean. I honestly can not fault it. The welcome Hamper full of local and home made Wiltshire produce was both really touching and utterly delicious! The Hut is located in a spacious and private paddock and is perfectly situated for long country walks to surrounding villages and pubs. I would recommend these Hosts and their site to anybody. We would love to return in the future, its a yes from the dog as well!

A great stay in horse lorry
We were in the Hood, which is a horse lorry on a site shared with The Nook (a shepherds' hut). We were knocked out with the accommodation. Surprisingly spacious and well equipped, with a gas oven and hob, fridge and even point to charge your phone by the side of the bed.

Hare’s Rest is cosy Romantic shepherd hut hidden away in a 2 acre paddock in the Wiltshire countryside. This is an idyllic escape for nature lovers who want to get a little closer to wildlife and enjoy a picturesque part of the British countryside. Hare’s Rest is located in a beautiful valley where the hillsides are home to famous chalk carvings of white horses. The hut is self contained and has everything you’ll need for a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The kitchen area is equipped with a gas hob, fridge/freezer and a large sink, everything you need to rustle up hearty meals after some long walks on the surrounding foot and bridle paths. While the luxurious double bed is the perfect place to restore your energy after a day spent exploring the countryside or the local towns and villages. The shower room is bright and airy thanks to the neutral colour palette that’s used throughout the hut. Even in the colder months, the hut is still a cosy place to escape to, with a wood-burning stove just right for snuggling up in front of on chilly autumn and winter nights, and fully insulated walls. Outside, the hut has its own garden area where guests can enjoy a barbecue and soak up the tranquil surroundings. There are several good local pubs in easy walking distance as well as wild swimming spots. A short drive will take you to castle ruins, the villages of Bradford on Avon, Frome and even the beautiful city of Bath. Welcome Hamper on arrival Well behaved dogs are also welcome Land is adjacent to our house.
Nearby attractions

Bradford-on-Avon is five miles from site with the Kennet and Avon Canal running through it. The Towpath Trail makes for easy walking or cycling and there’s bike hire in town if you haven’t brought your own. The site is in the valley of white horses, carved into hillsides. The closest to site is also the oldest: the Westbury White Horse, dating back to 1778, visible from a bridleway just behind the paddock, but there are seven more should you wish to discover them on walks or scenic drives. The Somerset town of Frome, with its cobbled streets and independent shops and eateries is a draw for lots of guests and just seven miles from site. Bath is 12 miles away and marks the southernmost point of the Cotswolds where there’s lots more pleasant walking and exploring to be done. Longleat Safari Park is about a half-hour drive and Wiltshire’s best-known treasure, Stonehenge, is 30 miles from here – a drive of around 40 minutes.

Food and drink

A welcome hamper with a couple of local goodies awaits you on arrival and includes some information on places to eat and drink in the local area from your hosts. The closest recommendation is The Poplars (01225 752426), a pub that serves food a couple of miles across fields and footpaths away. The Farmhouse (01225 764366) is another near option. For a West Country cream tea with a difference, head for one of the tea rooms aboard a narrowboat on the Avon and Kennet Canal, just outside Bradford on Avon. This old market town is full of good places to eat and drink including The Bunch of Grapes and there are more in Bath, 12 miles away.
