Glamping by the lake with an optional sauna and hot tub

It’s no wonder that Wonderland Festival Retreat in Sussex is sometimes used for weddings as well as glamping stays. It’s an idyllic spot after all. There are 10 acres of fields and orchards with a lake and views of the South Downs. Among all this, is a handful of glamping options including a lakeside geodesic dome (or Bubble as they call it here) and a shepherd’s hut. Each offers a glampy hideaway, designed for two. Both are great for chilled out, romantic stays. The fact that there’s a rowing boat on the lake and a spa deck with a hot tub and a sauna make it all the more relaxing.

Choose the Bubble for a prime position by the lake with loungers on the deck and a swinging seat in the dome’s window. Inside there’s a quirky circular bed, a log burner, a projector and facilities for making tea and coffee. It’s light, bright, airy and modern. Over at the shepherd’s hut, things are a bit more retro and a bit more boho too. With timber clad walls painted a gentle green, the hut looks traditional on the outside but step inside and a riot of colours transport you to more exotic shores. It’s a lovely space that also has a log burner and bed plus a little more in the way of a kitchen.

Each accommodation has its own shower and loo in a hut a few steps away, and both have access to shared spaces including an outdoor kitchen with a barbecue and pizza oven. The spa deck is available at an extra charge – one that’s totally worth it if you’re here to relax. It’s all situated on a country estate that spreads across 190 acres. In summer, its fields are grazed by sheep and cattle. In winter, they flood and become an unofficial wetland nature reserve, filled with wading birds. You really needn’t go anywhere if you’re after a retreat but if you’re the type that can’t sit still, there’s plenty of walking, cycling and wild swimming nearby. The South Downs are a few miles away, and the coast at Shoreham and Brighton is a few miles further than that.

Boho Shepherds Hut in Orchard
Lovely farm and site
I had a great stay. The site was green, clean and well designed. The hosts were lovely and helped me with any questions and issues that popped up.

Quirky lakeside stays in unusual accommodation surrounded by beautiful Sussex countryside with a wood fired hot tub and sauna! You can even book the entire venue on exclusive use basis for your festival wedding or party. Choose from breaks in a Bubble Dome, Tiny House, Airstream Caravan, Lakeside cottage, Shepherds Hut, Gypsy Caravan and (coming soon) a Showmans Wagon... each beautifully bohemian space has access to the spa deck with hot tub and sauna, boating lake and communal hang out spaces including an outdoor pizza oven.
Nearby attractions

The estate on which Wonderland Festival Retreat is found, is a good location for walkers and nature lovers – it’s a haven for wetland birds in winter. There’s a 45-minute circular walk within the farm’s 190 acres for a start but you can also get on to the Downs Link at the top of the drive. It’s a long distance route along a disused railway track which links the North and South Downs National Trails at its far extremes. Here, you can use it for peaceful walks or bike rides in the countryside. You can join the South Downs Way itself, a little over six miles away. It takes you along the ridge of hills that you can see from the glamping site, within the South Downs National Park. There’s also wild swimming in the nearby River Adur and at Barcombe Mills (22 miles away). The re-wilded Knepp Estate (eight miles) offers another great place for nature lovers with safari tours available on foot or by all-terrain vehicle. You can reach the coast at Shoreham-by-Sea (10 miles) or head into bustling and bohemian Brighton for the day (12 miles).

Food and drink

Wonderland Festival Retreat is just a mile away from the large village of Henfield – you can walk there in about 20 minutes. There’s a couple of small supermarkets and plenty of independent shops too, including a good greengrocers and butchers. On the outskirts of the far side of town (but still less than two miles) is Swain’s Farm Shop. If you want to eat out, Henfield also offers the closest options. Relish Deli is a great option for breakfast or lunch. Perhaps try The White Hart for dinner. Or head to The Wheatsheaf just outside town (three miles) for a menu with Brazilian dishes among the more usual pub fayre. Further afield, The Ginger Fox (four miles) is highly recommended. The Royal Oak in Wineham (five miles) is another characterful pub and the Bolney Wine Estate (eight miles) is a great place for a tour and tasting with a lovely cafe on site.
