Secluded bell tents near the border, with views of the Black Mountains

The two furnished bell tents at Campston Hill Wild Camping sit isolated from each other and everything else, half a mile from the nearest road in the Welsh borderlands. This is a chance to get off the beaten track in a proven location, while enjoying the comforts of home. You could see it as glamping that’s been taken off grid or wild camping made incredibly easy. Either way, you’ll get a tent with made-up beds and your own compost loo and shower. So what about the wild? Well – there’s no electricity and no neighbours: essentially it’s you and the view. And that view, by the way, is quite astounding. By day it’s green fields all the way to the Black Mountains, by night their inky outline lit-up by undimmed stars.

This is Monmouthshire, on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park which is recognised as a Dark Sky Reserve. In short, it’s a great place for stargazing thanks to the lack of light pollution. The two tents at Campston Hill are doing their bit to keep it unpolluted too – there’s no electricity here, so don’t forget your torch. They are pitched within a working farm and on your arrival, host Ellie, will come to meet you by the road. She’ll lead you, more than likely from her quad bike, up the farm track to your home-from-home. You’ll find it well set up with everything you might otherwise have packed for a camping trip already provided here.

While the vibe on site is wild with cooking on campfires and a shower that’s open-roofed under trees, you’re actually not far from anything you might need or want. The local pub is a good one and about ten minute’s drive. The town of Abergavenny is 15 minutes away and has everything you might need by way of supplies. Abergavenny is also a launch pad into the national park and all of its adventures, though you can set off on some of those directly from site. There are footpaths across the farm that lead straight to Offa’s Dyke Path, less than a mile away, and beyond it into the mountains.

A wonderful night
We absolutely loved our stay in Fern Bank! The setting is perfect and even in cloudy rainy weather we had a great time. The tent has practically everything you could need and is so spacious and comfortable and we loved making a fire and cooking on the firepit! Ellie was really good at communicating and we found the place easily! The shower wasn’t working when we were there but we will definitely look forward to it next time as the open air location is great! Our 3 year old loved it and as his first time camping it has defintely set the bar high. We will be back!

We returned this summer and stayed in a different tent. It did not disappoint.. the view from the tent was beautiful and our kids enjoyed playing outside and roasting marshmallows on the open fire. The hosts are very friendly and responsive. We would highly recommend a stay here to relax and unwind.

Rainy 1 Night Stay :)
This is the most fantastic little get away on a beautiful secluded farm. The hospitality was ten fold, greeted on arrival by Ellie who was a fantastic host, we were shown to out bell tent and given the lay down of the land and how everything worked and was left to crack on. The facilities are amazing, so thoughtful all the little extras that come with the tent. You literally need to get yourself there with some food and you wont need anything else to make yourself comfortable. I recommend the extra £10 for the firewood you'll get at least 7 hours burn time. Absolutely fantastic! If you’re worried about roughing it put your mind at ease! The warm showers are fantastic! 5 Stars from us! We will definitely visit again! Thank You!

We are located on the edge of Black Mountains on the borders of Wales. We offer a unique experience providing wild camping in your own private area, with the luxury of Home comforts. Our camping locations are in the heart of our working farm, so lots of sheep and cows to see along the way. Approx 1/2 a mile off the road you will find yourself descending into a little piece of paradise. Completely alone apart from the birds and the bees, nothing could be more relaxing than a stay in the country with us.
Nearby attractions

You can walk directly from the farm on footpaths into the surrounding countryside. Head in the right direction and it’s less than a mile before you hit Offa’s Dyke footpath for longer walks. That’ll take you into the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons National Park where there is, of course, plenty more adventure. The hike up Sugar Loaf Hill (596m) is a popular and worthy challenge. Abergavenny is less than eight miles away, Llanthony Priory is a 20-minute drive from here, Hay-on-Wye just over 30.

Food and drink

The Hunters Moon is a recommended pub in Llanggatock Lingoed, three miles from site and can be reached on a long walk via Offa’s Dyke path. Other options that can be reached by car include The Bridge at Kentchurch (about four miles) and The Hardwick (nine miles). Abergavenny is known for its good food and has an annual food festival in September. It’s a good place for eating out or stocking up on supplies if you want to cook on the campsite.
