Back-to-basics camping overlooking Abersoch on the Llŷn Peninsula

At one time it was just mechanics on their tea break who enjoyed the excellent views from Garej Mynytho, but these days they are sharing it with us campers. A simple campsite has been set up between the garej (garage) and the village hall to let you gaze upon the mountains of the Llŷn Peninsula and to put you within easy reach of its beaches. You can even see the sea from some spots in the field. There are, of course, campsites which are closer to the coast but few in this part of Wales, less than three miles from seaside Abersoch, are as peaceful, simple and as good value as this. And, by the way, it’s dog friendly too.

The campsite occupies just over an acre of grass in which you are welcome to pitch your tent or park up in your campervan. Facilities are a couple of flushing loos, somewhere to do the dishes and a water tap. There’s no shower here – but let’s face it, if you’re on holiday on Llŷn, you’re likely headed for the water anyway.

The peninsula is ringed by beaches; the closest at Llanbedrog, just two miles away. Abersoch is not much further and there’s Poth Neigl for surfing within five miles. We could go on but some days you may wish for something other than the sea. Garej Mynytho can deliver on that front too. You can walk from here up nearby hill Foel Gron and up to Mynytho Common for even better views. Jump in the car and anywhere on lovely Llŷn is within reach – and don’t forget this peninsula is known as Snowdon’s arm so higher peaks are never far away.

Fantastic location for the beach, mountains, and spectacular views. A wide variety of local places to eat out. Abersoch is only 2 miles by road. Pwllheli is a 10 minute drive away. LLanbedrog beach is 1.5 miles away and is a beautiful that is great for families. Abersoch has two long beaches. If you like surfing Hells Mouth beach is only 4 miles away, with the chance of seeing Dolphins and seals, and recently a whale. Visit the Ty Coch Inn at Nefyn Morfa for a pint on the beach, then up to the headland and Coast Guard station to see the seals basking on the rocks. Mynytho common adjancent to our site is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and the whole of the Llyn is a Dark Sky area.

Garej Mynytho Campsite
Great location for exploring around Pen Llyn. Flat field, very quiet, clean loos and a tap with easy access from the road- just what we needed as a base for the weekend.

Approximately 1.5 acres of open field with spectacular sea views possible from some parts of it. Mountain views from all of it. Mynytho meaning mountain is located on a hill and Garej Mynytho is one of the highest properties on the hill. Common land adjacent to Garej Mynytho is ideal for walks, with excellent views from Foel Gron and Foel Fawr. Nearest beach is Llanbedrog about 1.5 miles. Abersoch is about 1 mile away in a straight line but 2 miles by road. Plas Rhiw is a great National Trust property to visit while in the area. Travel a little further and Aberdaron is a great coastal village. Or go 20 minutes across the Llyn to Nefyn and visit the Ty Coch Inn on the beach. Garej Mynytho is on the edge of the village of Mynytho, about three miles by road (less as the crow flies), from the popular seaside village of Abersoch. You can walk out onto common land close to the campsite with Foel Fawr and Foel Gron two peaks to head for offering good views. On the coast, you can join the Wales Coast Path if you fancy a walk with sea views. The closest place to join it, or to hit the beach, is Llanbedrog where the sand is backed by colourful beach huts. There’s a dog-friendly section here too. Abersoch has two beaches and opportunities for watersports but if it’s surfing you’re here for, head four miles to Hell’s Mouth. When the wind is blowing in the right direction, the water off the long sandy stretch here is great for surfing. There’s a National Trust houses and gardens, Plas Rhiw, nearby too. The coastal village of Aberdaron (11 miles) is another seaside village, that’s a bit quieter than Abersoch but still with kayaking on offer. There are also boat trips to wildlife-rich Bardsey Island from there. The edge of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park is about 20 miles away, just over half an hour’s drive.

Food and drink

Mynytho Post Office and village shop is just down the road from the campsite – and a handy place to pick up supplies if you are cooking for yourself. For more than that, head into Abersoch village and, for the closest supermarket, head to Pwllheli (six miles). For a meal out, The Ship Inn (one mile) on the road towards Llanbedrog is the closest option and serves a menu of home-cooked pub food. Down in Llanbedrog there are more options including Aqua, a beach bar and cafe overlooking the water, which offers breakfast, lunches and food up until 6pm. For a meal out in the evening, you might want to try bustling Abersoch where Fresh Cafe Bar and Grill is a good option – and dog friendly. A place you may not want to miss is the Ty Coch Inn (10 miles) on the otherside of the peninsula. It’s a pub right on the beach and is a lovely spot for a sundowner – it only serves food at lunchtimes. Access is on foot only via a 20-minute walk.
