Safari tent stays in nine acres of re-wilded meadows in Monmouthshire

You’ll find the four safari tents of Medley Meadow between the Wye Valley and Bannau Brycheiniog (the Brecon Beacons). It’s a good place to stay if you want to visit either – or, perhaps, both. But it’s also a good spot to simply enjoy. These dog-friendly tents are pitched in nine wildlife-rich acres which are being managed with conservation in mind. Red kites and buzzards soar overhead, kingfishers, herons, and water voles are spotted by the pond and if you hear any snuffling about at night, that’ll probably be the resident badgers. Or the hedgehogs. Or, perhaps, even a pole cat. You’re probably getting the idea. “The wildlife,” says the family behind this re-wilding site, “is as welcome as the guests”. And you’ll soon find out that guests are made to feel pretty welcome indeed.

Each of the safari tents is kitted out for up to six people, with two bedrooms (one a double, the other a bunk bed twin) and space for two more on a sofa bed in the living room. That space is warmed by a log burner and incorporates the kitchen and dining room – and there’s an en-suite bathroom too. With electricity and running water, it’s a real home from home in the field and the fields are never far away. Unzip the front of your safari tent and you’ll find yourself on a huge verandah. It’s partly covered for shelter and shade and partly an open deck from which to watch the wildlife, enjoy a morning coffee, or even a spot of yoga. There’s a fire pit in your outside space as well, which is screened from the other tents.

A series of signposted paths help you weave your way around the meadows if you want to discover its hidden corners; among them are a stream, a pond, and an ancient oak. It’s worth planning to spend at least one day of your stay right here on site to slow down and really enjoy the peace of the place. But the world outside will beckon. The mountains and waterfalls of Bannau Brycheiniog on one side, the spectacular Wye Valley on the other with castles, canals, and rolling countryside in between.

Cherry Safari Tent
Gorgeous glamping
Even before we arrived at Medley Meadow, Louise was in touch to give us the lowdown and make sure everything would go as smoothly as possible. She met us on arrival, got us oriented and was in quick contact for anything else we needed for the duration of our stay. Meadow itself is beautiful, and the safari tents are as comfortable and well appointed as you could possibly hope for. Comfy beds with plenty of bedding, hot running water, flushing loos and plug sockets - it was all beyond our expectations. The tents are all a good distance from each other, so you can enjoy some seclusion as you have breakfast on the deck or cook dinner over the fire pit. Between the picturesque location, fantastic facilities and ever ready hospitality, Medley Meadow was more than we could have asked for and we can't wait to go back.

With 9 acres of meadows to explore there's an abundance of wildlife to discover. A natural pond, wetland habitat, babbling brooks and wooded glades. Our crystal clear skies are perfect for stargazing. On clear nights the Milky Way is easy to spot. Gather around the fire pits and listen to the badgers bark or grab a torch and go on a night safari. We like to make your stay as comfortable and as convenient as possible so we've tried to think of everything you'll need as well as adding in a few extra little luxuries. You really just need to bring yourself and a sense of adventure.
Nearby attractions

Beyond Medley Meadow itself with its signposted routes, you can walk straight from the site out into the countryside. There’s a lot within a 15-minute drive though including Goyte Wharf (three miles) on the Monmouth and Brecon Canal where there are picnic spots, walks and boat hire. Raglan Castle is six miles, and it’s about the same distance to Abergavenny on the edge of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. Within the park Clydach Gorge and waterfalls (10 miles) is a nearby place to explore but there are many more and all within day-tripping distance. The riverside town of Usk is 10-minutes’ drive from site. Symonds Yat, within the Wye Valley, is within a 30-minute drive; great for canoeing and kayaking, climbing, hiking and birdlife.

Food and drink

The Foxhunter Inn at Nant-y-Derry is the closest pub, about two miles away. You can reach it in a few minutes by car or walk there in 40 minutes for its good food, fire and beer garden. If you’re visiting Usk, The Nags Head in Twyn Square is recommended. For a really special meal, you might want to head to the Michelin-starred Walnut Tree Inn in Llandewi Skirrid, a 15-minute drive away. For local produce to cook on your barbecue, try Craft Renaissance Farm Shop and Kitchen, just two miles from the site. For more than that head into Abergavenny (six miles) where there are plenty of shops including two supermarkets.
