A shepherd’s hut on a smallholding in rural north Wales

Positioned in a small orchard with enviable views, Over-the-Moon Shepherd’s Hut, is a self-contained bolthole for two between the Clwydian Range and Eyri (Snowdonia) National Park. It’s a peaceful part of North Wales that could be a base for exploring either. Choose the Clwydians for more local days out or stay even closer to your home-from-home with walks and bike rides in nearby forests. Alternatively head into the national park for higher peaks and more dramatic scenery. All the fresh air adventures make this an excellent place for nature lovers and people with dogs so it’s great that this hut is dog friendly.

The hut is well built, well insulated and well kitted out. It has an en suite bathroom with a loo and shower, a kitchenette that’s good enough to cook simple meals in and a comfortable bed with outstanding views. There’s a log burner too. In the winter, you can fire it up and sit in bed watching the moon rise over distant hills. In the summer, you can sit outside and enjoy the same scene whilst toasting marshmallows by the fire. Whenever you come, you’ll have the place to yourselves. The hut sits in a small enclosed area of the smallholding surrounded by fruit trees and it’s the only glamping on site so the place is truly peaceful.

If you want tips on what to do in the local area, appeal to your hosts. Ruth and Jude are happy to share their insights and will even organise bespoke days out for your stay, if you talk to them in advance. They might point you in the direction of The Glan Llyn, the Welsh tafarn in the village, reveal the location of the supposedly-curative waters of ancient Ffynnon Sarah (Sarah’s well) or, perhaps, let you in on where’s good to wild swim. They’ll certainly recommend Clocaenog Forest for a woodland walk and they might suggest a scenic drive over the Horseshoe Pass into the Clwydian hills. But, of course, it’s your holiday and you might have your own ideas or simply be over the moon to stay right here and take in those lovely views.

Maes Heddwch is a great place to escape to, watch the sky and the birds, read, meditate, chat or play boards games (we provide a few). In the summer you’ll probably want to throw open the stable doors and sit and enjoy the views or sit and chat in the sun or around the firepit. In winter you can light the log burner and cosy down. We provide wood for your first evening and are very happy to show you how to use the log burner if its not something you are used to! Extra wood is available from us (see extras). If you can tear yourselves away from the views there are lots of lovely local forest and waterside walks,ç easy and challenging off road cycling options and if you want to use a car to help get up higher the Clwydian and Berwyn Mountains and Eryri (Snowdon) National Park are all within a half an hours drive. We can help with the public transport options (that aren't all known to Google!). Despite being away from it all there's loads of home comforts including a fully equipped kitchen with microwave/oven/grill, an electric hob and fridge, and an ensuite toilet and shower. If you do absolutely need to touch in with digital life most people get 4G reception on their phones/dongle and there is a smart TV you can use to play your downloaded movies etc - but we can arrange for it to be disconnected if you prefer! We are dog friendly, and the private enclosed orchard has (so far) proved safe for visiting dogs to be off lead. We have our own dogs, chickens and sheep so please keep your dog on a lead when not in the orchard or if you think they may figure out a way to go off and explore on their own! If you don’t bring a dog with you and would enjoy the company of chickens in the orchard please ask. The chickens are NOT allowed in the shepherds hut! Dogs or not you are welcome to ask to come and choose yourself some fresh eggs every morning! and to come and meet the sheep. We’re always happy to chat about the animals, vegetables, hay and other small holding matters! If you want a taste of village life it’s a short walk over fields to our community run local siop and tafan. The shop serves essentials including Welsh favourites like locally made preserves, cakes and Chilly Cow Ice cream. The pub serves evening meals Thursday – Sunday and people are known to travel a few miles for the Saturday morning breakfast and/or the Sunday lunch. Clawddnewydd ('New dyke') is a Welsh speaking community so if you can muster a ‘Peint o cwrw plis’ (A pint of beer please) or a simple ‘Bore da’ (good morning) you’ll probably raise a smile. In fact there are loads of great little villages near by each with their own character and points of interest including great cafes, walks, Punjabi pub food, river swimming, historic churches and sacred wells. Nearby Ruthin - one of the oldest existing Tudor towns - boasts an historic gaol, law courts and town house, a craft centre with regular exhibitions, indie shops and cafes. No time to research and plan? Bespoke itineraries are available to match your interests - see 'Extras' If you are coming away for a special occasion/want to surprise your partner then please contact us about celebration welcome packs (with vegan options) and decorations.

A perfect getaway
I had a wonderful time at Ruth's Shepards hut. The hut was so cozy and a perfect location to explore the delights of North Wales. The eggs from the hens were the best I've tasted! 😍 I was travelling alone with my dog and Ruth put me right at ease and was a very welcoming host. I can't wait to return to Over The Moon in the future 💖

Perfect stay in a beautiful spot
We absolutely loved our stay in this shepherd’s hut. The location is fantastic, with plenty of walks and nature spots nearby—perfect for outdoor lovers. The orchard garden was much larger than we expected and ideal for letting our dog roam safely off-lead. The hut itself was impressively well equipped with everything we needed: a fully stocked kitchen, shower, toilet, sink, soft towels, various lighting options, indoor and outdoor seating, plus both a radiator and log burner for cozy evenings. The bed was incredibly comfortable, making it easy to relax after long walks. It was also, without a doubt, the cleanest holiday stay we’ve ever experienced. Communication with Ruth was spot on. Everything felt just right, and we enjoyed every moment. We loved it so much we’re already booking our next stay!

Escape to the Country
We had the most wonderful stay at The Sheperd’s Hut. Ruth and Jude were truly wonderful hosts. The location is just beautiful. Waking up to the gorgeous views, and our exploring the local forest was amazing. The sheep, chickens, and friendliest dogs made for a wonderful walk through the field. Everything was spotless, and you could feel the work and love that had been poured in. Tea, coffee, and sugar provided, as well as all the cooking tools you could need. The log burner was set up for us before we arrived, and we lit it on our last night. It was so toasty. The hut was comfortable, cosy, and exactly what you need to escape to the countryside. The eggs from the chickens are a must have! The local village was lovely too. We had the most beautiful Sunday Roast in the village. We are so grateful for the hints and tips given in the binder on arrival. Diolch!

Absolutely stunning location and great hosts, they even dropped us a message to let us know the northern lights were visible that night. It's well kept, cosy and has everything you'd need. We will definitely be booking it again.

'Over the Moon’/'Dros y Lleuad' luxury Shepherds Hut is nestled in our enclosed orchard on our small holding. One of the things people love about staying here is the amazing views - including watching the moon rise over the mountains from the king-sized cabin bed. The developing Clwydian dark sky region means there are great views of the night sky. Tucked away in Maes Heddwch (Peaceful field) at the southern end of the Vale of Clwyd this is a great base to discover this lesser known corner of North Wales. We have done a lot of work since Google Maps took their pictures! Including planting tress and hedgerows. It is a lovely spot for a retreat from the hustle and bustle, sought out by walkers, cyclists, bird watchers, red squirrel seekers, foragers, neolithic stone hunters, artists, writers, historians and others. We are more than happy to share what we have discovered about the area before or during your visit.
Nearby attractions

Over-the-Moon Luxury Shepherd’s Hut is in the countryside on the edge of the village of Clawdd-newydd and about six miles from the market town of Ruthin. You can go on walks across the fields straight from the smallholding or, for a woodland walk, head to Clocaenog Forest (four miles). It’s good for bike riding too with quiet roads and tracks through the conifers. Keep your eyes peeled for red squirrel and black grouse. There's more wildlife, walks and bike riding at Llyn Brenig (13 miles) along with fishing and watesports. The reservoir is home to the Llyn Brenig Osprey Project and your chances of seeing the birds in spring and summer is high – with both a hide and a live link to their nest. For harder hiking, the Clwydian Range is close by with the 549-metre peak of Moel Morfydd, a worthy target. The Berwyn mountains and Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park are also accessible from here with mountain biking, climbing and caving all ways to spend your time. The village of Betwys y Coed, known as the gateway to Eryri, is only 20 miles from the site so it’s a good place to head for. Closer to site, in Ruthin (five miles), you can mooch about the shops and eateries and take a trip to Ruthin Gaol, a Victorian prison that’s now an award-winning visitor attraction.

Food and drink

You are staying on a smallholding with chickens and your hosts are happy for you to collect eggs in the mornings for your breakfast – or to order some in advance of your stay. For other basics, it’s less than a mile from Over-the-Moon Luxury Shepherd’s Hut to the centre of Clawdd-newydd village where you’ll find the closest shop (or siop). You’ll also find the closest pub (or tafarn) there, The Glan Llyn. Both are community run. The Glan Llyn offers food (but not every day – so check before you set off) and has a beer garden. For more options, head into Ruthin (five miles) where you’ll find everything from fine dining (try No 11) to fish and chips – with plenty of cafes and tearooms in between. There are also independent shops and supermarkets if you want to stock up on food to take back to your shepherd’s hut.
