A super-friendly, family-run campsite on the edge of Pembroke

For camping and glamping that’s a short walk from the amenities of town and a short drive from Pembrokeshire’s loveliest beaches, set the sat nav for Glan Y Mor Camping. It’s an excellent location in West Wales and, on top of that, the site has plenty of charm. It’s friendly, family-run, and located on a farm. A warm welcome is included as standard, facilities are clean and lovely, and extras are simple but sensible ways to enhance your stay. Think campfire kits for the evening, breakfast muffins for the morning. This feels like a campsite that’s run by campers – right down to small details like the classical music that’s piped into the washrooms to make a soothing soundtrack to your ablutions.

The main camping field is a grassy couple of acres that’s kept car free. It does mean you have to wheelbarrow your kit to your pitch – but that’s all part of the fun. It also means it’s a safe space for kids to run around in and there’s a private beech woodland that’s good for that too. The Bunker, a converted Cold War-era trailer from the Czech Republic, is the most fun of a handful of glamping options that are available on site. You’re welcome to bring your own campervan here too. If you do, you’ll be pointed to one of the hard-standing pitches which are closer to neighbouring buildings. It’s a less pretty backdrop than the field, but there’s still plenty of greenery and you are welcome to wander the woodland and use the other site facilities, which include a campers’ kitchen and communal fire pit.

The signs of civilisation around the edge of the campsite remind you of how close you are to Pembroke. You can walk into the centre to explore the castle, go for a coffee or visit the local pub. The town makes for a great base; a 20-minute drive to Tenby and only 15 minutes from the coast where beaches include Barafundle Bay. It’s been recognised not only as one of the best beaches in Pembrokeshire or even in Wales but one of the best in the world. Like the rest of this part of West Wales, that’s got to be worth a look.

Small tent pitch 7
A campsite worth the travel
A very beautiful and well equipped camp site. The facilities are well kept and straightforward. The site is a 20 min walk from town where you can buy practically anything. The owners are super friendly and very helpful with their recommendations regarding transport and things to do in Pembroke. Will definitely be back for another adventure!

Large Tent/RV pitch 3
A good site, decent shower and washing facilities. Nice fire pit and undercover area if it rains. Bigger bins would have been a great.

From the host
Glan Y Mor is a small family run farm in Pembrokeshire with a beautiful woodland campsite overlooking the Pembroke river estuary with views towards Pembroke Castle. We are ideally located close to local amenities, cafes and restaurants but also amazingly secluded and private. We offer an environmentally friendly and well maintained site with careful attention to detail.
Nearby attractions

Glan Y Mor Camping is on the edge of the town of Pembroke with the town’s amenities and attractions within walking distance. There’s the high street, the 11th-century castle where Henry VII was born, the museum, the rowing boats and the mill pond. For a longer walk, join the Pembrokeshire Coast Path near the castle and carry on in either direction. The closest beaches are good ones: Freshwater East (five miles) on the south coast and Freshwater West (nine miles) which is good for surfing with beautiful Barafundle Bay (six miles) in between. The pretty harbour town of Tenby is 10 miles from site and there are plenty of family-friendly attractions close enough to visit too. These include Manor Wildlife Park (eight miles) and Folly Farm (12 miles).

Food and drink

There are lots of good places to eat and drink near Glan Y Mor Camping and your hosts Catherine and Adam have plenty of recommendations, many of which are written up on blackboards around the facilities block. For breakfasts on weekends in peak season, however, you don’t have to go anywhere. A choice of breakfast muffins are served on site – just order yours the night before and you can pick up from the camper’s kitchen in the morning. Alternatively, try Cafe Rose on Pembroke’s Main Street. For dinner The Old King’s Arms in the centre of town is the recommended pub to head for and is just a short distance away from the castle. The Waterman’s Arms is another nice spot in Pembroke, with views across the mill pond. For fish and chips, there’s Rowlies. Further afield, The Stackpole Inn (six miles) is highly recommended for food. If you want to stock up on supplies for campsite cooking, there are plenty of shops in Pembroke too including Mott’s Butchers for all your barbecue needs.
