Almost wild camping with good views, near the River Wye and Brecon Beacons

This friendly campsite between the Wye Valley and the Brecon Beacons offers back-to-basics camping with a choice of two enviable settings. Choose between the pretty Pentwyn Dingle, where tree-dappled pitches line a babbling brook, and Lodge Field which offers views of nearby mountains. That won't be the only tough choice you'll have to make during a stay here either. Will you, for example, head out on a bracing walk up Gospel Pass, for a paddle down the River Wye, or for a mooch around the town of Hay-on-Wye? From this campsite, you can do them all. Just make sure you stay long enough to make it possible.

Before you book two week stay, however, it's well worth noting that the camping offered here is as close to wild as it’s possible for a site to be. There’s no shower here and no toilet – so you need to bring your own. That makes this place suitable only for those who like their camping truly back to basics – and it’s tents and campervans with portable toilets only. The terrain means larger motorhomes are not welcome here. What you will find are the things you need to make your stay possible and plenty to make it enjoyable. There’s water and a chemical disposal point, a campfire-friendly policy (off-ground fire pit required) and a beautiful natural setting. And there’s Martin too. Your super-friendly host has lived here all his life. His warm welcome, wealth of knowledge, and essential local tips have helped make many holidays.

The great location of this site has been attracting Scout, Guide, and Duke of Edinburgh’s groups for decades but it’s only fairly recently that it’s been opened to regular campers like us. And aren’t we lucky? The same thing that made it good for those outdoorsy groups, makes it ideal for outdoor-loving campers: a pretty setting and fantastic outdoor adventures.

Two beautiful sites on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Peaceful with wonderful views and surrounded by nature. Dark sky at night so fantastic for star gazing and views of the Milky Way. Two great local pubs less than a mile away by road if you want to dine out. The famous market town of Hay on Wye is only 4 miles down the road and definitely worth a visit. Talgarth with it's working flour mill is close by as are the historic market town of Brecon and Abergavenny. The Lodge field site has eight 16amp electric hook up points for an extra charge of £10 per night.

Perfection
We absolutely loved staying at the Lodge Field, the peace and tranquility surrounded by spectacular views of the Black Mountains were second to none. Martin was really friendly and couldn’t be more helpful and available if we needed. Martin is a wealth of knowledge on the local area. The site is well maintained and exceptionally clean- we loved the ethos of leave no trace. We will be back as loads to discover and explore.

Perfect Camping!!
Stayed down at The Dingle and how perfect. No facilities or electric means its not for everyone but for me this is proper camping, getting back to basics. Peaceful and relaxing with the sounds of the stream and birds. Dogs and raised camp fires allowed which makes this place ideal. Will definitely be returning. Thank you Martin. Deanne

Pentwyn dingle campsite is a beautiful 5 acre site with a babbling Brook flowing it's full length. There are trees on both sides of Dingle giving plenty of shade and privacy. The Lodge field is another 5 acre site with panoramic views of the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons. The Lodge Field site has eight 16amp electric hook up points for an extra charge of £10 per night. There are 12 native trees recently planted to give a parkland feel to site. There are miles of footpaths to explore the beautiful scenery. Lots of activities all within a couple of miles including horse riding and canoeing on the river Wye. Both sites have mains drinking water and a chemical disposal point for toilet waste. You will have to bring your own toilet facilities.
Nearby attractions

With the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons within sight of Lodge Field, and the River Wye just a couple of miles away, it’s no surprise that this area is good for walking and outdoor adventure. In fact, Black Mountain Adventure, less than two miles away, offers plenty of instructor-led sessions on land and on the water. You can head out on walks straight from site or, perhaps, head to nearby Glasbury (three miles), a village with access to the river and the Wye Valley Walk along the banks. It's a popular launching point for canoe trips and there are several hire companies that will pick you up further downstream (usually at a good pub). A little further gets you to Hay-on-Wye (four miles) where you can head out on a walk to conquer Hay Bluff or Twmpa (also known as Lord Hereford’s Knob), visit its famous book shops or hang out at one of its lovely coffee shops. It’s also home to an annual literary festival at the end of May. Talgarth is about the same distance away (in the other direction) with plenty of amenities, a lovely waterfall walk and a working watermill.

Food and drink

The closest pub to Pentwyn Dingle, The Three Horseshoes, is a traditional pub recommended by Martin, but (at the time of writing) was closed. If it remains so, another nearby option is the family-friendly Old Barn Inn, just over a mile from site. Alternatively, there are good options for eating out and picking up supplies in both Hay-on-Wye and Talgarth (four miles). Don’t miss the bread from Talgarth Mill which is made using flour milled on site. Glasbury is even closer and home to a couple of cafes with a handy shop at the petrol station.
