An exclusive-hire campsite with its own wild swimming pond in Pembrokeshire

Rhydfach Valley Camping is an informal little campsite in Pembrokeshire that’s available for exclusive hire only. So, if you book a stay, you'll have the whole place to yourselves: all seven acres of it. It sits on the edge of the Pembrokeshire National Park and is made up of field, scrub, and trees with a stream running along one side. There’s also access to a little pool that’s just right for pond dipping and wild swimming. And if the idea of that appeals, you’ll definitely like it here. There’s an even better wild swimming spot a walk away in the Preseli Hills—not to mention Pembrokeshire’s beautiful beaches, 20 minutes’ drive away.

This is a simple Hipcamp whereby your hosts, Dennis and Sue, have opened up a field behind their house. As a result there’s nothing too formal here; it’s just good old-fashioned camping. You pitch where you please (though most folk opt for the top of this gently sloping field) and can park up next to your tent. Facilities are found in a mobile home that’s positioned at the bottom of the plot where you have access to a hot water shower and a flushing loo. Outside, there’s a tap for your water supply and there’s a stone-circled fire pit in case you want a campfire.

All that separates your pitch from the site's pond is a little bridge over the stream at the top of the field. For more wild swimming, hike 20 minutes into the Preseli Hills, which rise up to the north. At Rosebush Quarry Pool you can enjoy a swim in emerald waters and, perhaps afterwards or instead, warm up with lunch at the nearby Tafarn Sinc. Alternatively, head for watersports and walking at nearby reservoir, Llys-y-frân, or take your pick from the beaches that line the Pembrokeshire coast.

Please note we only accept one booking for any given period, so you will not be sharing the site with any other campers. Payment is per person and guests are welcome to pitch more than one tent. Rhydfach valley camping is located in a peaceful valley within the Pembrokeshire National Park and within walking distance of the Preseli hills. Shower and toilet facilities are available in our mobile home. Guests can choose where to camp anywhere in our large gently sloping, south facing field that is surrounded by trees and with views over the surrounding countryside.  There is a small spring fed swimming lake in a separate area which guest are welcome to use. Wild swimming is also available at the local quarry pool and at Lys-y-fran water park which also offers other waters ports and has a cafe. The local village is just over a mil and has a grocery shop garage and cafe. The community owned pub of Tafarn Sync located in the pretty hamlet of Rosebush, has beautiful views across the valley towards the Preseli hills. The coast towns of Fishguard and Newport are a 20 minute drive (11 miles). Newport has a large sandy beach, ideal for swimming and  from where you can also access the 186 mile long Pembrokeshire coast path.

Rhydfach Valley Camping
This is the perfect campsite: it’s beautiful, quiet and private (apart from some proud geese parents and their four goslings). The brook is handy for keeping milk etc cool and there’s a mobile home with a loo and shower. The nearby village has a shop which sells almost everything and a cafe which provides generous breakfasts and lunches. And Dennis and Sue are friendly and informative hosts who know the area well.

Lovely few days away, great hosts
We had a lovely time, the location is beautiful. The hosts made our visit though: Dennis put a lot of time and energy into sending us recommendations of places to visit and the best routes to take/places to park. (I wish we'd been there longer to try out all of the walks and places he suggested!) The facilities are great too; there is a toilet and shower in the mobile home a very short walk down the field and the shower had consistent water pressure and hot water - perfect! In terms of places nearby, I can really recommend visiting Ty Canol Nature Reserve and the town of Newport, and the local pub Tafarn Sinc served some really delicious food.

We only accept one booking for up to ten people for any given period. Charges are per person so guests are welcome to pitch more than one We are located in a peaceful valley in the Pembrokeshire National Park, near the southern edge of the Preseli hills. Guests have the use of toilet and shower facilities in our mobile home. The camping field is sheltered by trees on three sides and is on a gentle South facing slope with views over the surrounding countryside. There is a clear fast flowing stream running down one side. Above the camping field is a separate area with a small swimming lake that guests are welcome to use. (Safety rules apply) The nearest village is Maenclochog one and half miles away. It has a well stocked grocery, garage, pub and cafe. The Globe is small and cosy, no dining but very welcoming. It has a dart board, juke box and a Pool table. Tafarn Sync next to the abandoned, picturesque slate quarry in Rosebush, offers meals and has an outside dining area. It is also a music venue. A short drive from Rhydfach is Llys-y-Fran water park. It offers a variety of supervised water sports, bicycle tracks, lovely lakeside walks, cafe and children's play area. We are a 20 minute [11 mile] scenic drive from the coastal towns of Fishguard or Newport. It is the same distance to the attractive market town of Narberth. Newport has a beautiful, lengthy, sandy beach, where you can access the 186 mile coast path. From Rhydfach it is a 20-30 minute hike to access public footpaths paths and forestry tracks into the Preseli hills, that offer far reaching views towards the South and West coasts. SAFETY RULES: Anybody who is not a competent swimmer must not enter the lake without personal buoyancy aids. Children are not permitted to wander beyond the main camping field, especially the lake area, unless supervised by an adult.
Nearby attractions

Rhydfach Valley Camping is inland, in central Pembrokeshire on the very edge of the Pembrokeshire National Park and the Preseli Hills. It’s a great place for all sorts of outdoor adventure. There is a little swimming hole on site and another, Rosebush Quarry Pool, which is well known about those who like to wild swim. It’s about a mile from site and you can walk there from site on local footpaths and quiet country lanes, if you wish. There’s more water and walks at Llys-y-frân reservoir (under three miles). You can head down the valley and park up for a walk through woodland to reach its shores – or head straight to the lake’s visitor centre where you can hire paddleboards and find out about other things to do. There are bike tracks there too. The closest place to reach the coast is Fishguard (11 miles) where you can head for the sand and shingle beach or join the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. In fact, the fairly central location of this campsite means there are beachside destinations in three directions: Newport and Fishguard are 20 minutes’ drive to the north, Newgale and St David’s are a little further to the west and Tenby and Saudersfoot are south of here.

Food and drink

Rhydfach Valley Camping is not far from the village of Maenclochog (just over a mile) where you can pick up groceries from its handy shop and garage. The village also has a cafe, Caffi'r Sgwar, which is good for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. There’s also a good cafe at Llys-y-frân reservoir (three miles). The closest pub is Tafarn Sinc. It’s a similar distance, up the hill in Rosebush. It serves food and is community run. Built in a former railway station that served the nearby quarry, it’s a quirky little place with its history on display and sawdust on the floor.
