Despite its compact size, Maryland offers a wide variety of outdoor experiences perfect for a cabin getaway, from hiking the wooded Appalachians to exploring the wetlands off of Chesapeake Bay. There are 66 state parks in total, encompassing almost 100,000 acres of land, and Maryland state parks alone offer some 120 cabins that can be reserved up to a year in advance. If you’re into fly fishing, head to the Savage River for some 30 miles of trout fishing and lakefront cabins, or for a city break, head outside of Annapolis or Baltimore to vacation rentals with wifi, fire pits, hot tubs, and more modern amenities. For an unusual experience, head to Assateague, known for its large population of wild horses that roam freely on the island.
