Warriors o' Rainbow Horse Sanctuary

3 sites · RVs, Tents16 acres · Reeds, MO
The pasture is quite visible from Old Route 66, nearly adjoining it. Therefore people traveling “the Mother Road” find it convenient to stay with us. Grass is the best forage for horses, especially older ones, so we take care of our pastures, making for beautiful scenery for campers, too. Plus the entire back mile is bordered by old forest. And there is a swimming hole not a half mile away. This is a quiet and private site, bordered by a neighbor's old forest on back, other neighbor's cattle pasture on side, and you're in one of the pastures used by the Horse Sanctuary. (You are camping about 1/4 mile, more or less, from our house.) We regularly see coyote, wild turkeys, deer, fireflies, and the like.   We are just 1/2 mile off Old Route 66, therefore there are quirky little museums and great restaurants (for such a rural area!).   Plus we are only about an hour's drive from Branson. MO. which is a known tourist attraction.

Orphans Island

3 sites · RVs, Tents4 acres · Orphans Island , MO
Float, Fish, Swim or vacation in the Ozarks. We have approximately 3 acers of the 15 we own set aside for camping. Plenty of room for two campsites on cleared, level land adjacent to the James River. We offer a dumpsite for holding tanks, water from our well to fill your water tank and electricity to charge devices and RV batteries at my barn. Also in 2023 I added a port a potty for tent campers. Generator rental available. Located about halfway between Springfield, MO. and Branson, MO. Nearby attractions include canoe rental, trout fishing, and mountain bike park. Please note, This campground is located in a floodplain and weather related cancellations are common. If you are camping to be close to nearby attractions or don't mind a muddy, flooded river I can let you camp on higher ground. Not quite as private but still lots of room. Fish, Fish, Fish. This river is primed for fishing. You will have to bring your own boat, or float as I don't have good river bank fishing access. There is a state park boat ramp a short distance away. The steps in the photos are plenty sturdy to tie boats to overnight. This river is fishable with flat bottom jet drive boats most of the spring and early summer and floatable year round. You can float to your campsite and relax instead of waiting in line at the boat ramp. Also we are located about 13 miles from Crane Creek, A blue ribbon trout park. You can camp here and fish there.

Hummingbird Inn and Campsites

7 sites · RVs, Tents20 acres · Reeds Spring, MO
The Hummingbird Inn is a beautiful retreat with many acres in its environs. There are two swimming and fishing ponds to choose sites from as well as off the beaten path places to set up camp. You'll only be about 15 minutes from downtown Branson but nestled up on a beautiful ozark mountain. The views are incredible here. We hope you will enjoy your stay. There is water available from several spigots powered by a large well. There are no bathrooms so you'll need to release in the woods and take your hygienic paper out with you. Looking for wwoofers as well. Please turn right before the inn and go down and park by the warehouse being careful not to block the golf cart trail. Camp anywhere first come first serve other than the trail itself. Please turn left before the inn and turn immediately left to the lower pond and park near or around the pond. Swim at your own risk!

Camping near Springfield guide

Overview

Missouri’s third-largest city offers a base camp for exploring the surrounding Ozarks region. Explore the up-and-coming downtown district, paddle down one of the many scenic rivers in the area, or head south to the tourist attractions and trio of lakes in the Branson region (less than an hour away). Campers will find pleasant RV parks, public campgrounds, and unique glamping accommodations both in town and amid the rolling Ozarks hills. Relaxation can be found in rural areas, while urban areas tempt with entertainment options.

Where to go

Downtown Springfield

Home to Bass Pro Shop’s first store—now a tourist attraction in its own right—and the award-winning Wonders of Wildlife museum, Springfield has entertainment for the whole family. The downtown area has been rejuvenated in recent years, offering an eclectic mix of local restaurants, coffee shops, bars, galleries, and cozy shops. Camping can be found at a number of RV parks on the edge of town, as well as at private campsites.

Stockton Lake

About an hour north of the city, Stockton Lake serves as a peaceful retreat, offering several camping options. The Corps of Engineers operates nine public campgrounds, many of which have water views, electric hookups, tent and RV sites, swim beaches, boat ramps, and more. The lake is a popular spot for fishing, boating, and swimming. It is also notable for its sailing opportunities. Stockton State Park has a campground with basic and electric sites for both tents and RVs. It also offers deluxe and rustic cabin rentals.

Branson

To the south of Springfield, Branson is an entertainment mecca, known for its family attractions, theme park, and outdoor recreation. Private RV parks abound, offering full hookups, swimming pools, onsite activities, and more. Scenic public campgrounds can be found along the lakes, including numerous Army Corps of Engineers parks on Table Rock Lake, which are the most accessible to Springfield. Table Rock State Park is another popular option. Unique glamping getaways can also be found, including cabins, treehouses, and luxurious tents.

When to go

Summers in southern Missouri can draw in heat and humidity from the South, making the weather hot and sticky. The best camping at this time of year is in shaded campgrounds or waterfront sites. Spring can be cool but pleasant temperatures and budding flowers make it a pleasant time of year to visit. Fall is, perhaps, the most scenic, as the Ozarks hills erupt in color. Winter can be mild—or, you might find freezing temperatures and a mix of frozen precipitation.
