The capital of Washington state, in the heart of the Puget Sound region, Olympia is a compact college city with a slightly bohemian vibe. Its location at the junction of Interstate 5, which connects it to Seattle, Portland, and Highway 101 (which leads to the Olympic National Forest and Olympic National Park) makes it a great base for cabin campers who want easy access to different parts of the state. Campers should expect plenty of rain, however, except during the unpredictable summer months. Fortunately, there are plenty of private cabin options in the Olympia area, both in the woods and on retreat centers and farms. Many of these cabin rentals, winter chalets, and vacation rentals come complete with amenities like full kitchens, queen-sized beds, linens, wood-burning stoves, and maybe even an outdoor shower. If you don’t mind heading a bit further out, you’ll find state park cabin rentals at Dash Point State Park (a 45-minute drive away) and at Belfair State Park (an hour from Olympia).
