Our property once had a vibrant back woods community. During the Civil War a Union garrison was up the creek and traveled through here to the river. In the 1800's the Brady Family Farmed here. There was a Church that has long since burned down. This place is great for metal detecting! We moved here in 2018, there was nothing else but a open well, fields and woods. We live in a trailer and are building a farm. There's chickens and pigs, that you can meet! Learn more about this land: We are a small, mostly off grid homestead farm with chickens, ducks, pigs, and bunnies, located 1.25 miles off the paved road, over 2 miles from the nearest residence. Our hideaway farm is 80 acres centered on the convergence of two babbling creeks, in a valley between three mountains. We are happy to teach you about our homestead lifestyle or set your campsite and just relax. We practice permaculture and follow organic farming practices. Our Main Circle is where our bonfires, cabana, and home trailer is. You are welcome to camp at the Main Circle where we have electricity or you can camp elsewhere. We own the bike shop "Bigfoot Braxxie's Bikes" in Gassaway, WV. If you are a cyclist and want to explore the back roads or dirt mountain trails ask us! Our shop sells, rents, and repairs bicycles. We also have accessories, used bikes, and parts. We specialize in electric Ebikes so visit our shop and take out a bike while you are here! See Extras for bike rentals. We've adjusted our hours for check in to 5pm because we staff the bike shop ourselves. If you want to check in earlier you can meet us at the bike shop or we can make special arrangements for you, just ask! Please do NOT bring firewood from out of the area. This is one way invasive insects get transported. There are NO Ash Trees because of the bore beetle. We offer firewood, and there are plenty of places close to get FREE firewood, just ask. Campers are encouraged to camp at Kolb Field along Coon Creek, under a great-grandfather walnut tree or hike the mountain and set camp secluded away from everyone. We have a public dirt road that is seldom traveled through the property, we do suggest having an SUV or 4x4 when coming but, regular cars can get here and we can help you get to your site in our pick up truck. RVs and non-4x4 cars can only get to the camp area during dryer times of the year, please ask if you have a RV. If you have a car that can't get to Kolb Field because of high water, we do have other areas you can camp at. Our farm is a great destination for overland camping and getting your pick up truck a little dirty! Because we are mostly off grid we do ask that what you pack in please pack out, take your trash with you. Be sure you bring your own mess kit and cup. We prefer that you use aluminum cans for your beverages so we can recycle them for you, we can not recycle plastic or glass. Plus we like to be sure there not broken bottles left behind so we can be bare foot! We are very dog friendly. You are welcome with your dog. Let us know if you want to play with our happy dogs, and want to have them around your camp! Please only bring your dogs if they are both dog and other animal friendly. If there is ANY CONCERN your dog will not get along with our dogs please ask us for a recomendation for some place other to stay. Our dogs patrol our farm to keep our animals safe! And our animals, particularly our chickens and ducks, free roam during the day, some may make it close to your camping area, depending on where you choose. We ask that you keep your dogs tied or maintain control of your dog. Our three dogs are free roaming, they keep predators away and may lead your dog off too far. If you do let your dog off the lead we are not responsible if they get lost. That being said, our dogs love to play with guests and we are always happy to let you and your dogs interact with them! Please don't feed our dogs or other animals unless you ask us first, thanks! We LOVE to Bar-B- Que! We offer on weekends and holidays to join us for BBQ dinner at the Main Circle for a small cost per plate, buffet style. We will be creating a Farm to Fork open air restaurant in the near future. Everything, as much as possible, is homemade from scratch (and quite delicious if you ask anyone). Deer Hunting season 2020 is Nov. 25th to Dec. 7th (you will see an increase in price since we are so busy) Please be aware that the holler is very active with hunters and our friends. It's a great time to experience West Virginia local culture and learn about hunting. You must be tolerant and comfortable with people with firearms and deer that have been harvested and being butchered for the freezer. We will teach you about deer processing if you like (see Extras). Safety is always first on everyone's minds here and everyone that hunts here are land owners or family that have been hunting here for many, many years. There are 300+ acres of public land less than one mile away with miles of ATV and hiking trails and stocked ponds. If you're a fan of waterfalls just 4 miles down river is Arden Falls, one of our areas best kept secrets. The Tygart Valley River is one of the top kayaking rivers in the country. Audra State Park is less than 20 minutes away with lush forest trails with caves to explore. Well known hiking trails such as Seneca Rocks, Spruce Knob, and the Dolly Sods are all within an hour drive. Go to Nelson Rocks for the ultimate climbing experience on the Via Ferrata. We are the perfect place to come to explore the wild beauty of West Virginia without the crowds. A hidden gem!

If you’re seeking mountain vistas, you’ve come to the right place! Bound by the Appalachian Mountains and the Allegheny Mountains, West Virginia is an alpine wilderness brimming with craggy peaks, cascading waterfalls, and forested ravines. Outdoor adventures are this state’s lifeblood, whether you’re hiking the Appalachian Trail, cooling off at a mountain lake, or enjoying some of the best rock climbing and whitewater rafting in the east. The main camping season runs from spring through fall, but winter getaways are still possible—six state parks offer year-round camping, and many RV parks and cabins stay open through ski season.

Where to go

Potomac Highlands

Winding mountain roads and backcountry hiking trails lead the way through the Allegheny Mountains and the Monongahela National Forest in eastern West Virginia. Four-season adventures await at Blackwater Falls State Park and Canaan Valley Resort State Park, which harbor some of the region’s best ski slopes, while rock climbers congregate at Seneca Rocks. Further east, Harpers Ferry is the gateway to the Appalachian Trail and home to the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.

Mountain Lakes

West Virginia’s central lakelands offer a welcome change of pace for campers. Pitch your tent or park your RV by Summersville, Sutton, or Stonewall Jackson lakes, and take to the water to boat, kayak, paddleboard, or fish. Encircled by forested mountains, there are still plenty of opportunities for hiking, especially at Audra and Holly River state parks.

Mid-Ohio & Metro Valleys

Victorian-era mansions and historic towns dot the banks of the Ohio River in the Mid-Ohio Valley, where campers can enjoy simple pleasures like woodland walks, river fishing, and sipping craft beer at a country pub. The 72-mile-long North Bend Rail Trail is the ultimate challenge for hikers and cyclists, and one of the most scenic sections runs through North Bend State Park. Continuing west, Charleston and Huntington are the principal towns of the Metro Valley, while the best campgrounds are hidden away in the Kanawha State Forest.

Southern West Virginia

Raging rivers, soaring cliffs, and vast swathes of wooded hills make up West Virginia’s southern region, affording endless options for adrenaline seekers. Rev up your OTV and explore 800 miles of off-road trails in the Hatfield-McCoy mountains, go mountain biking or horseback riding in Greenbrier State Forest, or check out the state’s best whitewater rafting at the New River Gorge and Gauley River National Recreation Area.
