The best camping near Fort Washington Park guide

Overview

About

Stunning views of the Potomac River and Washington, D.C. await you at this historic hidden gem.

Originally named Fort Warburton, this was once a working fort that guarded the water approach to our nation's capital. After the first fort was destroyed during the War of 1812, the bigger, stronger Fort Washington was built in its place and remained a major line of defense for years. Today the 341-acre park is a bit more serene, but history and military buffs will enjoy exploring the grounds and the 3-mile trail that follows the park's boundary. Make sure to stop in at the visitor's center for a quick orientation video before you set out on your journey.

With the fort situated away from the usual D.C. crowds, the park offers much needed solitude for the local wildlife, making it a perfect place for birdwatchers, fisherman, and nature lovers to enjoy. Don't forget to pack a picnic! Plenty of picnic tables are available for groups both big and small. The kids will also have plenty of places to run, jump and shout in the nearby playground.

So whether you're a history hound or an outdoors enthusiast, you'll discover plenty of recreational activities to enjoy in this picturesque park found off the beaten path.
