Overview

About

Muskallonge Lake State Park may no longer be the lumbering town it was in the 1880s, but you better believe its topography still shows signs of it. Accessorized with sawdust piles and accented with the occasional pine log lingering in the lake, this park is very clearly brimming with history. Get filled in on the deets at the nearby Logging Museum or spend part of your stay getting the lay of the land in a riverboat that sails you right past Tahquamenon Falls. Also closeby is the Seney National Wildlife Refuge and places to hunt for duck and geese. But, back on the 217 acres that make up Muskallonge Lake State Park, you’ll have access to all the forests, lakes, and streams your heart desires, and to us, that sounds like a sweet, sweet, deal.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Muskallonge Lake State Park is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is warm and the lake's waters invite swimmers and boaters alike. Fall also offers a spectacular display of changing leaves, making it a picturesque time for hiking. Winter can be harsh, with heavy snowfall limiting access to certain areas, so it's best to check conditions before planning a winter visit.

Know before you go

  • Ensure you have a Recreation Passport for park entry, as it's required for all visitors.
  • Check the trail conditions before heading out, especially after inclement weather.
  • Remember to pack out all your trash and leave no trace to preserve the park's natural beauty.
  • Cell service may be limited, so plan accordingly and inform someone of your itinerary.
  • For those looking to fish, familiarize yourself with local regulations and obtain the necessary licenses.
