See the extras section for details.**    Resting in the foothills of the sapphire mountains, just outside the town of Stevensville Montana, this beautiful 20 acre property is conveniently located halfway between Hamilton and Missoula; it is also a good midway point between Yellowstone and Glacier national parks. The outdoor activities are endless. Biking, hiking, fishing, swimming, hunting, trail riding, snow skiing and more are all within reach. Deer, turkey, osprey, killdeer, nighthawks, and eagles frequent the property as well as the occasional elk herd; and the Lee Metcalf wildlife refuge is about 15 minutes away.    The property sits about 400’ above the valley floor; giving spectacular panoramic views of the bitterroot valley and mountains, as well as incredible sunsets.    The paved road ends about 1 mile before the property, the remaining mile is a gravel road. There is also a one lane bridge right before you get to the property. Firewood is available for use at no charge.  Sewer hookup has not been run to the site yet but if you have a portable tank, or want to pull the camper over to the house, it can be dumped as needed beside the garage; just ask and I can show you where the pipe is.  There is a nema 14-50 hookup providing 50 amp power at the site; if needed I do have a 50 to 30 amp adapter you can borrow during your stay.  Water hookup is also available at the site, but may be limited in freezing weather.  If temperatures are to cold we can turn on the water to fill your tank as needed and then blow the line back out.  If you need to borrow a potable water hose let me know as i keep those in the garage unless needed.  There is a non-potable water hose that is available at the site, with a spray nozzle, incase you need to rinse or wash off gear, vehicles, etc.   SpaceX Starlink high speed internet is available via WiFi. You can also charge your electric vehicle, if needed, with the power at the campsite or I have another nema 14-50 plug available at the garage of the main house. Be sure to let me know if you will need the plug at the garage so I can make sure it is accessible.  If you have other questions feel free to contact me and I will do my best to answer them. ****The first 10 photos were posted by me and are taken from the actual hipcamp spot. The best camping near Granite Ghost Town State Park guide

Overview

About

Several thousand miners once lived at Granite Ghost Town, a former profitable mine where upwards of $40 million of silver generated immense wealth in the 1870s. Walking the old buildings and encampment is a trip back in time, but the drive is often the highlight of this trip, beginning in the historic town of Philipsburg. Here, visitors can mine for sapphires and visit the town’s iconic brewery before driving the dirt road to Granite Ghost Town. Wildlife is often visible from the road and the ghost town yields wonderful views of the surrounding forests. Although Granite Ghost Town State Park has no camping, a number of campgrounds and Hipcamps can be found nearby.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for mountain bikers: Rumsey Bike Camp has tent and campervan sites with access to mountain bike and hiking trails.
  • Best for history buffs: Gunslinger Ghost Town has 25 dry campsites situated in another nearby historic ghost town.
  • Best for adventure: Red Lion Basecamp is set in a remote mountain region with exceptional recreational opportunities.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. Private campsites are booked on a reservation basis. During the summer months, campsites fill quickly in Philipsburg and the surrounding area, as this is a popular destination for anglers and tourists.
  2. Granite Ghost Town is adjacent to national forest lands with numerous first-come, first-served campgrounds available. Look to Flint Creek and Rock Creek for convenient camping options, or check out US Forest Service cabins.

When to go

Access to Granite Ghost Town is limited to a dirt road, and access can be difficult in bad weather conditions. The road generally remains open in winter, but snow and ice can require a 4x4 vehicle to access. For the average visitor, the road is best during summer and fall before the snow arrives. The park itself is officially open from Memorial Day through the end of September, but hunters and other recreational users share the road beyond the park’s opening and closing dates.

Know before you go

  • Granite Ghost Town is a pack-it-in, pack-it-out park, and no public services are available. Use restrooms in Philipsburg and bring your own water and snacks when visiting.
  • Open mine shafts, pits, and hazards exist in this area. Walk only on developed pathways, follow the self-guided tour information, and be cautious about dangers around the mining camp.
  • The road to the ghost town is narrow, so drivers should exercise caution. Only visit when the roadway is dry and safe to travel.
