The best camping near Capulin Volcano National Monument

Who knew there was a volcano in New Mexico? This remarkable national monument gives you the chance to walk right into the crater of a fairly new volcano—only 30,000 years, give or take. (Don't worry, it's extinct.) The hike around the rim is absolutely worth it, with spectacular views in all directions. Bring hiking boots and poles because it's not a lightweight trek.

The Rangers are awesome, especially if you have kids who love doing the Junior Ranger thing. Take a moment to see the brief video at the Visitor Center before you start your drive up (you have to wait your turn for this rather hair-raising drive). Once you're at the top, choose the rim hike, head into the crater, or both.

Everything is beautifully signed at this monument, so when you look out from the cinder cone, you know exactly what you're looking at. The presence of the cone has created a microclimate here that attracts wildlife you wouldn't normally see at a volcano. Keep your eyes peeled for herds of mule deer and even swarms of ladybugs.
