Discover the unique allure of Great Salt Plains State Park.
Looking for something different for your next outdoor getaway? Check out the very unique Great Salt Plains State Park where you can spend time on the salt crust of a prehistoric sea bed! This park has lots to do besides exploring salt. There is a lake for boating, fishing, and watching migratory birds (like pelicans!), as well as a trail network for hiking and horseback riding. In the adjacent Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge there is a seasonal crystal dig area where you can hunt for hourglass shaped selenite crystals under the salt crust. It is the only place in the world to find this type of crystal. Best camping souvenir ever! Since you may get addicted to this crystal digging, why not spend a few nights at one of the park’s many campsites or splurge on one of the newly renovated, eco-friendly cabins. This area is a real gem!
The best time to visit Great Salt Plains State Park is from April to October, when the crystal digging area is open and the weather is favorable for outdoor activities. Summer months can be hot; plan accordingly. Winter brings cooler temperatures and fewer visitors, offering a peaceful park experience, though some activities may be limited.
