The best camping near Fremont Indian State Park guide

Overview

About

Welcome to a treasury of rock art and archaeological sites relating to the Fremont Indians. This culture thrived 1,000 years ago, and pictographs and petroglyphs remain.

Gaze at beautiful Clear Creek Canyon to appreciate why the Fremont culture chose to settle here. The surrounding mountains also add to the mystique of the place.

Start your explorations at the visitor's center. Thousands of artifacts are preserved here. Archaeologists discovered them during the construction of nearby Interstate 70 highway. Pottery, baskets, and arrowheads show a vibrant hunter-gatherer culture.

Hike through the park to find out what life was like for the Fremont. Guided tours take you to the pictographs and petroglyphs. Ancient artwork on the canyon walls somehow survived a millennium of wind, rain, and snow.

Reserve your spot at the campground, around 1/2 mile from the visitor's center. There are no hook-ups. Camp from late April to November.

When to go

The best time to visit Fremont Indian State Park is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the park's beauty is at its peak. Summer months can be hot, so if you're visiting then, plan for early morning activities. Winters are cold, and snow may limit access to some areas.

Know before you go

  • Check the weather forecast before your visit, as conditions can change rapidly.
  • Wear appropriate footwear for hiking and exploring the petroglyphs and pictographs.
  • Bring plenty of water, especially during the warmer months, to stay hydrated amid the dry climate.
  • Respect the park's historical sites and artifacts; do not touch or deface them.
  • Visit the park's museum to enhance your understanding of the Fremont Indian culture.
