Enjoy the country life in Kau on the South End of the Big Island and the lovely red Lehua flowers blooming. We live on 20 acres on Road to the Sea, which has a remote green sand beach at the end of the road (4 miles down from us). We call our slice of paradise, Honua Laa (a sacred place). Straight down to the coast is a beautiful black and green sand beach and a huge tide pool. Rent a four-wheel-drive to get there. You don’t need a 4WD to get to our place, but you will need a SUV or truck. Go slow the road is bumpy and rough in places. We are 1.2 miles from the highway. Off the grid. Rustic, but fun. If you are a Eco tourist or seeking adventure, you will love our spot! The silence is golden and the stars are amazing. Don't expect a hotel...this is upcountry glamorous camping. Shared bathroom (see photos) about a 100 feet away. Hipcamp kitchenette includes a propane single burner, ice chest, No fridge. No oven. We have an outdoor fire pit, if you like campfires! It's one-of-a-kind! Most of the parcels are 20 acre parcels around… But a few smaller parcels across the road. We have nice neighbors who keep an eye on things. The nearest grocery store is about 3 miles away. The Hele-On Bus is just 1.2 miles up the road. If you want to drive to the green sand beach at the end of our road, rent a 4 wheel drive. If you are athletic, you can walk, but it is 4 miles down and 4 miles back. I recommend going early in the morning and take water. Hot water shower is propane. Bring ice for your ice chest. Bring drinking water. There is plenty of coffee and tea in the kitchenette. Boil hot water in the kettle, put cone filter with a paper filter and ground coffee inside and on top of thermos. Drip. It's delicious! This is off the grid solar and there can be days without sun, or other glitches. No wifi. I use ATandT and I understand that Verizon and Tmobile work also The panoramic ocean view is spectacular! Very peaceful and relaxing! The back 15 acres is an old Ohia forest with 500 year old trees and lots of birds. You might even see a wild goat or a wild pig. There are small caves and gorgeous rock formations. It backs up to Manuka Forest Reserve. We have beautiful furnished cabins with beds, so you don't have to pitch a tent. Pillows, blankets, fresh towels provided.Enjoy the country life in Kau on the Big Island and the lovely red Lehua flowers blooming. 4WD recommended
The road is rocky and bumpy and it is 1.25 miles down towards the ocean from the highway. We use our 2 wheel drives, but we go very very slow. Most guests complain unless they have a 4WD. You need a 4WD to go 4 more miles to the green sand beach and tide pool.

Group trip
Our hosts made us feel very welcome, were quick to respond to requests, and shared helpful info about the area. The location was terrific - quiet, rural, easy to stargaze, the ocean was visible from our hut, and a beautiful beach was 4 miles down the road. Our car didn't have the clearance needed to traverse the lava road, but our host offered to provide transportation.

Camping on the Big Island
This was a very fun adventure!! The sleeping arrangements were awesome!! This time of year had cool nights and warm days!! The road isn’t all that bad if you take your time!! Debbie and her husband were very kinda and supportive !! The only thing that was hard really was the bbq little old but we managed!! I’d come again but I also no how to camp!! So if you want to truly experience camping in hawaii this place makes it pretty easy!!! Thanks again!!

4 Wheeling away from it all.
We loved the Bamboo Hut. Get you self a Wrangler Jeep or similar with high clearance and drive down into the lava fields and enjoy time away from it all. The hut has solar lights and phone chargers, couches and a nice big bed. There is an outdoor kitchen covered and shower and bathroom on rainwater collection as it's common on the islands. Recommended stay.

Loved the Bamboo Hut! YouTube Vid
Bamboo Hut was amazing! The road there was definitely bumpy, but as mentioned, drive slow and you’ll be fine. Clean bathroom facilities with warm shower and flushable toilets, made staying comfortable. We love the rustic camping but having these amenities was a huge plus! The view was beautiful! The hut was beautiful and clean! Lots of Christian values throughout the hut and area. Thanks for sharing your humble abode with us! The kindest host and the ocean view
With kids
Debbie was caring and warm right after I booked the trip. She answered my questions right away which she doesn’t have to. The place is so quiet and safe. It gets the gorgeous ocean view! It’s truly one of the kind. I feel so safe out there, because Debbie is so trustworthy. Debbie also gave us so much privacy and lots of great advice. I’m so grateful to her that our big island trip is just so awesome!!! To my surprise, this place has flushing toilets and solar powered lights and charges. Oh the bamboo hut is huge!!! I can see the ocean from out of my window. It’s one hour from the volcano park. Thank you Debbie!!!
