Indigo Eagle Sanctuary is an incredible place to experience the abundance of nature in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Our Sanctuary features two main areas: Mountain Tops, or Creekside sites.
Immerse yourself in beauty and adventure, with waterfalls, a rushing creek, fishing, and camping.
Our creek properties include the Creekside Cabin, and Waterfall Haven (multiple camping site options, with their own areas by the creek). Guests have room to explore the mossy wonderland along Hornbuckle Creek, take a dip in a swimming hole, take an adventure and follow a rough trail (at your own risk) to another waterfall, accessed across the creek, or just kick back and relax.
(Note to guests: Trail has not been maintained since last year. Go at your own risk.)
Our mountaintop options include Eagle’s Nest and Songbird Campsites. These two sites provide breathtaking, long-range mountain views and epic sunsets. They are great for quick get-aways, with ease of access to main roads/highways.
Indigo Eagle Sanctuary Sites are located within a few miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway, Cherokee Reservation (museum, shops, dining) and Maggie Valley, a quaint mountain town with more shops, food, and entertainment. Nearest grocery stores are Ingles in Waynesville, or Food Lion in Cherokee. The popular Asheville is about a 50minute drive from our Sanctuary. Plenty to explore here, while being able to unplug and unwind.
The site lived up to the hype. We stayed at Eagles Nest #2 and it is a very well kept camp site. The nearby waterfall isn’t a long trail, but it is a fun and moderately challenging trail. If you have small kids or just can’t make the climb then there is an easy overlook to get to. We would absolutely go back to this spot.
Camping on this property was like spending time in a little piece of heaven! This is our second time coming to Indigo Eagle and we are looking forward to round three! We love tent site 5. Beautiful views and the sound of the creek is so relaxing. Host is very friendly and helpful. Indigo Eagle is such a special place to my family. Glad we were able to create memories here. 💕
This campsite was exactly what we were looking for - a secluded and rustic tent camping spot next to a waterfall or swimming hole. Our 2 dogs came with us and absolutely loved jumping in for a swim (or a dozen swims throughout our stay). There were NO other campers that weekend (not sure if that was because of being a few weeks post-Helene, or just a little known spot), so they also got to run around off-leash, and we really enjoyed the quiet and the privacy.
One word of caution - when they say you need a 4WD or AWD to access the campsites they really mean it. I drive a Honda Element and we had to be extremely careful to not bottom out the car and some of the rougher patches of road. There were some roads that branched off going uphill (to the mountaintop sites maybe?); we didn’t try going up these but I’m honestly not sure even my car would have made it if so, so it’s possible that a few is the sites might need a 4WD specifically.
Accommodations are rustic - don’t expect flushing toilets or hot showers - but clean, dry, and level.
Foliage was beautiful on the top of the mountain. Down by the creek where we were the leaves hadn’t yet turned, but it was already too cold for the human half of our party to want to jump in - so next time we go we’ll either go in summer, pick a mountaintop site, or go even later in the Fall. One thing I know for sure though - we WILL be coming back!
We loved camping at Mountain View #2!! I would highly recommend this site - we were secluded and felt like we were on top of the world. Definitely follow the written directions to get the site, the coordinates took us down a rough road that could have been avoided if we would have followed the directions in the description!! It’s only about 7 minutes off the pavement, so if your GPS says more than that, double check it!!
We loved camping at Indigos site #2! There is another site just below but you have the whole top to yourself and we could only hear the other campers occasionally. It’s a spectacular view as well! We will definitely be back!
If you want mountain views, it doesn't get better than this camp site. It was perfect for our long weekend. Close to town and the BRP if you want to explore. The weather was perfect, and we happened to be there during a meteor shower! Pictures really don't do the view justice. Definitely book site #2, it's great!
