This central location provides an ideal basecamp close to the Terlingua Ghost Town and both Big Bend State and National Parks. The unique geology and topography of the Goat Pens made this a popular movie set and many westerns were filmed here in the 80's and 90's. Come out and enjoy seclusion, peace and quiet, awesome scenery with sunrises and sunsets to die for. All while still being able to easily take advantage of the area's other attractions.
The Goat Pens includes an outdoor events venue that hosts concerts, stargazing parties, festivals and weddings. The Goat Pens also has the only drive-in movie theater in the Big Bend area. Send a text or check The Goat Pens Facebook page (@goatpens) for information and dates of events.
The Goat Pens of Cigar Springs Ranch is a beautiful part of the ranch. It is well known for its scenery and unique topography. The Goat Pens served as a set location for many westerns filmed during the 1980's and 90's.

Our firewood is from nearby ranches- we cut and bundle it ourselves- we use mostly mesquite in the bundles.
This is the second time we stayed at the goat pens! Easy to find, beautiful views and really fun terrain to have a little hike!
The first time we went, Jeff was so friendly, showed us around the place and told us great stories about the land!
I definitely recommend camping here, easy drive to Terlingua proper and Big Bend.

The goat pens was a total rip off. It’s completely false advertising. They make it seem like remote camping on a huge ranch with beautiful views but in reality it was a small dirt pit with hills covering the view and you’re directly next to your neighbors. Why make it seem like it’s something it’s not and charge a steep $50 for it??
I wish I could get my money back. I didn’t even stay it was so misleading. We drove in and immediately turned around.

Great Overland Camping!
Tent
Camping at the Goat Pens at Cigar Springs Ranch was awesome. Jeff was a great host who was very friendly and accommodating.
600 acres is at your fingertips. Coded gate for security to the property. I had no fear leaving my homebase campsite everyday as I explored Big Bend. Jeff stated there had never been a theft at the campsite as long as he's been running it.
The camp site is approximately 20 to 30 acres inside a bowl located at the center of the property. Very beautiful. Hiking along the ridge of the bowl was very fun. Sites were spread out a good distance. When you arrive, it's first come first serve choosing a location.
2 separate outhouses on the property. They have lights and one has running water for hand washing and the other has hand sanitizer. Always stocked with toilet paper. The showers were always full and work by gravity. Not the strongest stream, but it gets the job done. As long as it's sunny, water is warm.
Overall I was very happy. I wanted to offroad through Big Bend and have a campsite that was semi-primative to mimic overlanding. This spot was booked last minute as all the primitive roadside campsites were booked. This site fit the bill though and was a gem. Would definitely come back.
