Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space. Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. We'd like to share the camp with others and see it come back to life. All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky.

Great campground
Thanks Adam for the good communication. The site was accommodating for our group of 8, and plenty of space for 5-6 tents if needed. Fire pit had cooking grates, easy to use. There’s a short walk to the facilities and game room which was great as well. Ping pong and other games plus indoor tables to use if the weather was against us. Potable water was also there and easy to get to the tent site. My group will be back!

The campsite was very good. Restrooms could be made better and updated. Toilets are cramped and there's no good place to set clothes or other items while getting ready. Overall, a pretty good spot.

RV Site 3
Great Spot
Adam was a great host. He responded within minutes to all questions that were posed to him concerning the site. The campground is nice and historical dating back to the early 1900’s and was the home of CCC and later a juvenile detention center and then a school. The RV sites have no hookups but generators were permitted. Cell service and internet in the RV area is spotty but that is great- a nice break away. The tent sites and bathhouse were awesome tucked away in a nice wooded area with large sites. The prices were reasonable and the hospitality could not have been better. Exceeded my expectations and I will return again.

We rode our motorcycle here for a weekend stay and ride the area scenic roads. The campground was clean and well maintained with a lot of history. Our host Adam was great and went out of his way to drop off fire wood. We'll definitely come back again!
