Campfires, mountain views and ample grassy space in the heart of Snowdonia National Park

The imposing Cader Idris (meaning legendary giant) lies at the southern end of the Snowdonia National Park, near the town of Dolgellau. This towering peak has plenty of legendary tales attached to it. It's said that anyone who spends nightfall on its summit (Penygadair) will awake either a poet or mad; although we think you'd have to be slightly mad to attempt pitching up there in the first place. Regardless of its mythical reputation, Cader Idris is one of the most popular places in Wales for walkers, hikers and rock climbers, and is yet another piece of natural splendour that makes up the Snowdonia National Park.

Slumbering in the shadow of Cader Idris is Torrent Walk, a welcoming, well-kept kind of campsite. It’s a great place to do very little except appreciate the natural surroundings, in fact emerging from your tent each morning to the sight of mist-veiled hilltops is worth the entrance fee alone. It’s a simple, informal set-up here: two mainly flat, spacious fields house up to 60 campers, and facilities include a newly built washing block, providing guests with power showers, and a centrally-heated toilet block. Handy extras include a baby changing area, Wi-Fi and a free secure lock-up, drying room and jet-wash for your muddy bike, ensuring all mountain bikers are fully catered for.

Torrent Walk sits deep in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park, Wales’ most popular slice of nature, with around 350,000 walkers and climbers taking on Mount Snowdon’s summit (1,085 metres) each year. Yet the park has much more to offer than just Snowdon. Stretching 50 miles north to south and 35 miles east to west, this diverse park covers coastal areas, villages steeped in history, rivers, waterfalls, and beautiful Bala lake, Wales' largest natural body of water.

After a fabulous day discovering the natural wonders of Snowdonia, there’s a good chance the local residents of Torrent Walk will be waiting for you. Whether it’s the horses in need of a friendly pat, wild rabbits bouncing merrily amongst the long grass, or a selection of dawdling ducks gathered expectantly outside your tent, there’s always some form of wildlife to admire here. All in all, Torrent Walk is perfect for those seeking a friendly, welcoming Welsh campsite, with a marvellous location and even better views.

This campsite offers a mix of experiences with its clean facilities and friendly staff being a highlight for many. Visitors appreciate the well-kept amenities, warm showers, and accommodating staff, making it a comfortable stay. However, several campers noted the persistent noise from the nearby road, which can detract from the serene camping experience. The location is convenient for local attractions, but the pitches can be rocky and cramped, impacting comfort.

Awesome staff but rocky soil
Tent · Group trip ·
Staff were absolutely lovely, facilities were awesome hit showers, clean toilets, menus for near by cafes and very close to near by village and garages which was very handy, the only few downsides were the plot we stayed on had a lot of rocks under the grass which made pitching a tent a bit of a mission and the distance for the toilets was a bit of a treck but would definitely come back just for the friendly and helpful staff and the ease of the surrounding area

It's ok
The campsite is super nice, very good accommodations, clean bathrooms, good location. I would like to point out that it is next to the highway and there is a lot of noise from cars at night.

A very clean and well organised campsite with friendly staff. My stay was at the start of the off season and we were all nicely spaced out. The road noise was noticeable but died down after dark.

Great location but reception weren’t friendly, a bit disinterested. Road noise disappointing and site was a bit littered but pitches adequate and level. Torrent river is nearby, 5 min walk down the lane and great for kids. There is a coin operated vending machine and few mins drive to a Starbucks and petrol station. We left early as site didn’t really offer a longer holiday feel, find for a few nights.

Hiker, biker or both? Walk this way. Torrent Walk Campsite is a Snowdonia mecca for mountain bikers and walkers with trails for both all around. The Torrent Walk is only 500 meters from the site and the famed Coed-y-Brenin mountain bike centre is in the area with acres more walking trails around it. And, for the truly hardy, the mountain Cader Idris and its three trails can be tackled nearby... and for the hardier still, the ziplines and airborne antics of Zip World Bounce Below are 35 minutes' drive away. Back at base, Torrent Walk Campsite is surrounded on all sides by woodland, farmland and has views towards the mountains, with pitches on a sheltered level field. The pitching field is adjacent to the site buildings: toilet and shower block, disabled facilities, washing machines and drying facilities; campers have access to a fridge and microwave too. We have super fast Wi-Fi all over our site which is free to use and also a power wash for bikes and equipment, and the Torrent Walk team can store your bike for you if needed. For stocking up, the garage just up the road sells essentials and camping gas, a shop and café are within a five-minute walk, and a Co-op and a wide range of shops in the village of Dolgellau just a mile away. Cooking your own dinner? Campfires are allowed on site: buy a fire starting kit from staff to spark up. Bring your own firepit or hire one from reception. We require £20 deposit to hire to be paid by CASH only.
Nearby attractions

Torrent Walk Campsite is nestled between hills and mountains in the heart of Snowdonia National Park.

Conveniently located just off the A470, with great access to local attractions such as Coed Y Brenin bike centre, Dyfi Bike Park, watersports at Bala or Barmouth, Zip World and the mighty Cadair Idris mountain. "Cader" is Snowdonia's second highest summit, within view from the campsite and only a 10 minute drive to the start of the hike.Situated just over a mile from old market town, Dolgellau, there are plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants nearby.

And of course we have the torrent walk itself, just on our doorstep, which is a must when you come to visit.

Food and drink

A small shop selling bread, milk etc is 200 meters away, and a larger Co-op and Spar can be found in the town, which is just over a mile away. Starbucks just up the road.  There’s little need to stray beyond the nearby town of Dolgellau for a bite to eat; Y Sospan Café and Bistro (01341 423174).
