Description

If most campsites are like hostels—you share a space with a bunch of travelers you’ve never met—then the three Pila Montoya sites are like private suites for you and up to seven friends. Ok, not quite suites given that there is no water or electricity and really just a picnic table to speak of, but these three scenic solo sites with only two tent pads each are certainly private. Plus, the area is stunning and diverse—you can easily hike the low road and wind through Fresno Canyon or the high road and conquer Sauceda Solitario Peak, one of the highest points in the park at 4,786 feet.

We just got back from Pila Montoya 3 which I must say--based on dozens of back country camping trips to the big bend area--is the best all around site we've ever stayed at. Here are the most important things to know:
- we made it to the site in a 4wd Rav 4 w/street tires, not that i would recommend trying it. The road in definitely requires 4wd, but the biggest risk is getting a flat tire--i would not try this again without good all terrain tires
- there's a shelter over the picnic table and a pit toilet. info on this is mixed on other sites
- there's a ton of great hiking all around the site, with plenty of smallish mountains to climb, very awesome for young kids.
- lots of tent pad room but also lots of little rocks; bring a good pad.
