Possum Kingdom State Park campgrounds are actually split up into four different camping areas in additional to a 10-site primitive camping area.

The four main loops are all located directly on the lake and are; Spanish Oaks, Lakeview, Shady Grove and Chaparral Trail. Spanish Oaks sites 1-21 are in a prime time location. Situated right next to the concession stand, gas station, playground, park store and marina, you’ll be just a short walk away from pretty much everything you’d ever need. With shower and restrooms facilities on site and electricity/water hookups too, you might never want to leave. Lakeview sites 22-38 are located just off the marina, next to Shady Grove and right on the lake. These grounds come with water only, but are just a short walk from the nearest shower and restroom facilities. With a boat launch just next door, this is a great spot for those eager boaters, itching to get out on the lake. Shady Grove sites 39-78 are sandwiched between Lakeview and Chaparral Trail. Here you’ll have showers/restrooms on site as well as water and electrical hookups. If you can, snag a spot closer to the lake. You’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views and you’ll be farther away from the noise of traffic. Chaparral Trail sites 79-116 are the farthest south and east of all the campgrounds in the park. A little bit more removed from all the hustle and bustle of park activity closer to the marina, these sites are good for a bit of peace and quiet. This quiet corner comes equipped with a playground, water, showers and restrooms.

The lake is beautiful and clean no doubt about that, but I was completely disappointed with my campsite at the Lakeview campgrounds. I understand it was July 4th weekend and I knew it would be crowded, but I didn't expect to have a loud, large family of about 30 right next to my site. The fire pit was on the wrong side and was about 12 feet from our neighbors. Really awkward because they were facing us. I booked this particular site because the pictures showed it had a stand up grill to cook on. It did not only the fire pit grill. The rangers were nice but they were no help since they couldn't move the fire pit for us. Our neighbors were loud until midnight and kept shining their truck lights in our tents. We packed up the next morning.

The roads out to pk have some really sharp turns, drive under the speed limit for your first time or two out!

Your guide to camping in Possum Kingdom Campground

Overview

Biking

Bike along park roads to explore the beauty of Possum Kingdom State Park. The park recommends wearing a helmet for safety and to check with park HQ to find a ride that matches your skill level.

Boating

Boating is a great way to explore the beautiful water and scenic shorelines of Possum Kingdom State Park. Use the boat ramp to launch your own boat, or rent a boat slip at Possum Kingdom State Park Store and Marina. The marina also rents canoes. The park asks that you have your boat ready before arriving at the boat ramp to launch.

Fishing

Trust us, once you see the clear blue waters of Possum Kingdom Lake, you will definitely want to go fishing. The most common fish species in the lake are largemouth bass, white crappie, striped bass, white bass, channel catfish, and blue catfish. If you do not have your own fishing supplies, you can grab some at Possum Kingdom State Park Store and Marina. Grab a fishing license if you'll be fishing from a boat, but you don't need one if you'll be fishing from the shoreline.

Hiking

Hiking is a great way to explore and adventure along the beautiful shorelines and limestone ridges of Possum Kingdom State Park. The scenic 1.37 mile Lakeview Trail winds through prairies and woodlands and is an excellent place to check out wildflower blooms in the spring. Take the .36 mile Longhorn Trail to get a good view of the park and lake from above. The .46 mile Chaparral Ridge Trail is a steep and challenging short hike but brings you through juniper groves and to scenic viewpoints.

Paddling

Canoeing and kayaking are a great way to explore Possum Kingdom Lake’s clear blue waters and miles of shoreline. Rent a canoe from Possum Kingdom State Park Store and Marina if you don’t have one of your own. Make a day of it by bringing your fishing gear out on the water as well.

Swimming

Don’t forget your swimsuit when visiting Possum Kingdom State Park! Slip into the pristine blue waters in the swimming area not far from the Spanish Oaks Camping Area. There are no lifeguards here, swim at your own risk.

Wildlife watching

Located in canyon country of the Palo Pinto Mountains and Brazos River Valley, Possum Kingdom State Park offers a variety of wildlife in and around Possum Kingdom Lake. You're likely to see white-tailed deer if you're camping or exploring here. The Possum Kingdom Longhorns are currently visiting the rolling plains and wooded regions of San Angelo State Park while their home at Possum Kingdom State Park is being restored.
