As Doc Holiday says, “I’ll be your Huckleberry.

" While he most likely wasn’t referring to this Big Basin camping site, this is not a spot to be overlooked. There are a total of 30 tent campsites (7 of which are walk-in), as well as 36 “Tent Cabins." The tent cabins have to be reserved in advance and provide a pretty unique experience. Some of the sites are very close to Sempervirens Creek. As far as the tent campsites go, they are “semi-private," and are decently large. Each campsite offers a picnic table, fire pit, and a food locker. Sleep among the trees at this awesome Big Basin Redwoods State Park camping location.

Just camped here over July 4th weekend and it was fantastic! Beautiful campground within the Redwoods, lots of shade, plenty of space between your neighbors. The staff did a fantastic job of keeping the restrooms clean often. Only one downside was the check-in process this weekend but it is understandable with the holiday. Would highly recommend this site!

Love camping here under the beautiful redwoods! Can get crowded, but with planning you can find some semi-private ones and/or not right on top of each other.

We found a lovely, secluded, walk-in site with an incredible stargazing spot a short hike away. The racoons will steal your food, though.

Camped in February. Beautiful campsite! Can get a little chilly under the trees this time of year. You can pay for campsites with a card but need cash to buy wood.

Really enjoyed camping here. A lot of the campsites are very spaced out so you don't have neighbors right next to you. Campsite 63 was very private, while at the same time really close to the water spigot and not far from the bathrooms. The bathrooms have bright lights at night, so consider that before picking a site that's right next to the bathroom. The bathrooms themselves are very clean and are all individual unisex bathrooms, which is nice for privacy. The campsite had a nice deep fire pit and a food locker to keep your food away from the Jays, Ravens, etc. Only complaint was that our campsite was very slopey with not a lot of flat space, but we made it work okay. Overall this is a great place to camp, with some stunning Redwoods!

Lovely campground - amazing to be able to sleep surrounded by giant redwoods. We came here on a rainy weekend in the fall and camped in the tent-only spot 61H. Though it's next to the restrooms, it was a quieter weekend so there wasn't too much noise or light distractions. And on that note, the restrooms were the cleanest I've seen of any campground! However, beware if you're camping here during a particularly rainy period - we (along with most others in the campground) packed up a day early. Because the tent pitch areas are lower than surrounding areas, you may end up with your tent submerged in a few cm of water! I'm hoping to come back again to fully explore the Sea to Skyline trail.

Beware of yellow jackets at the campgrounds during the warm months. The park staff hang traps throughout the sites but they are still terrible.

Beautiful campground, though some sites are small if trying to fit 2 tents in. Great restroom/shower amenities, and just a very short car ride to the park HQ where many of the popular trailheads are (can park at the HQ lot). My only knock against Big Basin is that it's one of the most popular and crowded state parks I've visited, so need to reserve very early in advance.

This is a beautiful area with fantastic, long trails, so you can't go too wrong getting a campsite anywhere in Big Basin Redwood State Park. That said, site 60 in Huckleberry is right beside the parking lot and across from the bathrooms/dumpster, so I probably wouldn't pick it (or surrounding sites) again. It's also pretty close to the other sites, so you can hear their music/see their fire. Overall, more of a quick-and-dirty party site than a secluded getaway.

Very nice campground. Hike-in spots are just like 100 yards from the the parking spot. Bathrooms are surprisingly hotel-clean :-O. The hikes include three decently sized waterfalls and tons of redwoods!

Your guide to camping in Huckleberry Campground

Overview

Biking

Mountain bikes aren’t allowed on the single track lanes, however there are still some great rides. They are excellent for beginners because most of the riding is on fire roads, of which a large portion is paved. It’s not for dirt devils, but the remoteness of the area still makes it a special ride.

Hiking

So you want to hike through some of the oldest gigantic Redwoods in the state AND frolick around a waterfall? Well, that’s a little greedy, but why the heck not? This is Big Basin after-all and all your dreams can come true (if you dream about these things...I know that we do!). There’s over 18,000 acres to explore, so you can hike all that your heart desires. However, there is a lot, so make sure you check out some of the best hikes in Big Basin Redwoods.

Horseback riding

Horses are allowed in Rancho Del Oso and there is a horse camp! Make sure to check out the information for horse camping before going.

Wind sports

Waddell Beach, located across Highway 1 from the park entrance, is known worldwide as one of THE spots for windsurfing and kiteboarding. The steady, strong North-West winds and good surf provide ideal conditions for this demanding sport. With the strong winds and occasionally heavy surf, Waddell Beach is not recommended for novice windsurfers. Make sure you check wind conditions before you go and have an epic time. Just keep in mind that the beach is about a 50 minute drive away from the campgrounds, so plan accordningly.

Surfing

Waddell Creek is known as one of the great kiteboarding and windsurfing spots, but it also provides some excellent surf (on the right day). Make sure to see if the conditions are right before you head out. For a detailed “surf map,” check in with our friends at Surfline.

Wildlife watching

Big Basin is teeming with wildlife (this is a good thing). Sliding along a mossy piece of fallen tree you’ll find banana slugs, while foxes dart through the nooks and crannies of the lush forest. This forest is very much alive and you will see this in almost every step you take!
