Drive to this Great Barrier Reef hot spot in the heart of Queensland to see rare turtles.
Although known primarily for its rum and ginger beer, Bundaberg is a destination that offers so much more to campers. From here, you can access the southernmost reaches of the Great Barrier Reef, including Lady Elliot Island and Lady Musgrave Island. The diving and snorkelling are impressive year-round, but we recommend timing your visit for sometime between November and March. This is when rare loggerhead turtles head to Mon Repos Beach to lay eggs, and after dark, you can even watch the turtles hatch and scurry to safety at sea. A family-friendly destination, expect to find Bundaberg caravan parks with amenities to keep the whole family happy—think full hookups, spacious campsites, and dump stations. But if you're looking for a more immersive experience to reconnect with your loved ones, campers can find it on an unpowered site on private farmland. All of this is accessible only a half-day's drive north of Brisbane.
