Gully Getaway

17 sites · RVs, Tents40 acres · Proserpine, QLD
Bush camping along the banks of a seasonal Gully that is lined with huge, majestic paperbark trees. There are 10 separate camp spots and all have a slashed track to the pit toilet. 3 in shady areas away from the gully that are suitable for Caravans. 3 located near the Gully, suitable for Caravans and larger groups and 4 that are located near the Gully but only suitable for camp trailers, roof top tents and smaller groups. Enjoy nature and feel free to explore the gully with it's many natural bridges and hidden animal habitats. As this is a working family farm, cattle from the remaining property will graze this Gully block from time to time so all gates must remain closed. We also ask that children are supervised at all times and advise that the Gully is not suitable for swimming. Kelsey Creek is a cane farming district and a small gauge train line goes past the property which makes for a lovely rural experience. Keep an eye out for the glow in the sky and you might get to witness a cane fire also. Being only 7 minutes west of Proserpine it is well located to take in the beauty of the Whitsundays. Gully Getaway is in an Environmental Protection Zone that restricts trees being felled and the removal of debris in the watercourse, so please do not use for firewood.

Located in the hinterland northwest of Mackay, our campground is very private with a maximum of only 2 campsites on our 100 metre long flat lawn. The site is fringed with rainforest and not visible from the road. A private track leads through the rainforest to a swimming hole. We are on beautiful St Helen's creek below Mount Dalrymple, just outside of Eungella National park's eastern boundary. Walk to the creek for a swim or walk around the gardens. Bring your goggles as the creek is clear and there are fish and turtles. There are many tropical butterflies including Cairns Birdwings and Ulysses to be seen. Birdwatching is also great here with many tropical species including the Wompoo and Rose-crowned fruit doves, azure kingfisher and torresian pigeons. The campsite has its own toilet, showers and drinking water. Campers can enjoy the "Tiki Hut" camp kitchen with BBQ, offset smoker, some comfy chairs, hot showers, flushing toilet, colourful lighting, kitchen bench with hot water and some 240v power available for light duties such as charging phones or running laptops. Power is all battery stored off-grid solar and can't provide heavy power such as cooking, heating or air-conditioning. Walk to the Strawberry farm for pick-your-own strawberries (available at certain times of the year only). Hang out in a hammock in the Tiki Hut or walk to another local swimming hole nearby. In the evenings, warm your feet by the campfire. You will need to BYO firewood. Please note that there is no mobile phone coverage here. You will be "Offline" throughout your stay in paradise. We have a landline at our house which can be used in an emergency. We are "friendly dog" friendly. So if your dog greets strangers and other dogs with a smile and a tail wag, they are welcome. If they bark or don't get on well with other people and dogs, then please leave them at home.

Caravan parks near Hamilton Island guide

Overview

Hamilton Island—with its well-connected airport to Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane—lies at the heart of the 74 islands within the Whitsunday Islands. It’s the natural jumping-off point for Whitsunday camping as well as beach camping within the national parks of the Great Barrier Reef. Try Whitehaven Beach, Chance Bay, Joe’s Beach, Nari’s Beach, or Dugong Beach on Whitsunday Island, or Crayfish Beach or Maureen’s Cove on Hook Island. Have an entire island to yourself at the national park’s Henning Island, where the Northern Spit camping area and its sandy beach are a popular rest stop for kayakers paddling the Whitsunday Ngaro Sea Trail.

Where to go

Whitsunday Island

Whitehaven Beach is the poster child for Whitsunday Island, and is often voted among the top 10 beaches in the world. Its dazzling white silica sand and turquoise waters are the main attractions for beach walking, swimming, and snorkelling, while a small campsite sits tucked in among the bushland on the beach in the southern corner of a sweeping bay. Walk across Hill Inlet at low tide to reach the lookout point at Tongue Point for sweeping views of the national park, beach, and islands.

Airlie Beach

Airlie Beach is the first stop for any Whitsunday Island holiday and one of Queensland’s favourite holiday playgrounds. Boats depart daily for the islands, but there is plenty to do in the town itself, with its free waterfront lagoon, markets and tour operators. Book a day trip to the islands to snorkel on fringing reefs and coral gardens at Hayman Island, kayak at south Molle Island, or swim among tropical fish at Maureen’s Cove.

Great Barrier Reef

The Whitsunday Islands lay within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and are a dream destination for campers, snorkellers, scuba divers, kayakers and nature lovers. Book a boat tour to visit the outer reef, where water clarity is at its best, and scuba diving and snorkelling are superb. Around the islands, the best snorkelling locations to see colourful reef fish and corals are Blue Pearl Bay near Hayman Island, Butterfly Bay on the north side of Hook Island, and on the beaches lining the passage between Hayman Island and Hook Island.

When to go

The Whitsunday Islands are a year-round destination and a popular holiday region. During the summer months, they may be prone to dangerous tropical cyclones. The southeast trades are the prevailing wind, generally blowing between April and November, and making for great sailing and kitesurfing conditions. School holidays, especially during Easter and Christmas, are busy times when campsites should be booked well in advance.

Know before you go

  • Boats to Hamilton Island depart from either Shute Harbour or Airlie Beach.
  • Camping permits are required and must be pre-booked online.
  • Campsites have limited facilities, so campers should be self-sufficient and take all rubbish when they depart.
  • Open fires are not permitted at any campsites.
  • Marine stingers inhabit the waters of the Whitsundays, so precautions like stinger suits should be taken, particularly during the summer months.
  • Shark attacks have occurred at Cid Harbour, where swimming is not recommended.
  • Tour operators at Hamilton Island, Airlie Beach, and Shute Harbour can arrange island drop-offs and camping connections for island-hopping campers.
