Go from rainforest to reef to campsite in this small town on the Daintree’s edge.
The small Northern Queensland town of Mossman is best known for its spectacular gorge, the Mossman Gorge, which is part of the UNESCO-listed Daintree National Park. The town itself is mainly an agricultural hub but it makes a good alternative base to Port Douglas, which is just a few minutes’ drive south, or Cairns, further south again. Campers can stay at holiday parks beside the river or drive to the nearby coast, where there are beachside camps. It’s also possible to camp within the Daintree National Park, although there are no campgrounds in the Mossman Gorge section of the park. Campsites around here typically offer tent camping as well as cabins, the latter of which may be preferable during the wet season. Note that some sites may be closed or inaccessible during the wet season, especially when there’s a threat from cyclones.
