In the early 1970’s Mr James, the owner of 'Biara', subdivided three 25 acre blocks across the road from the original homestead. The first block was sold to his nephew, the middle block was to be purchased by the Preston family and ‘The Gateway’ was purchased by a Mr Carveth. Unfortunately, the sale of the middle block fell through then, due to family illness, 'Biara' was sold and the family moved to Blackheath. After this move, and as thank you to his son, Mr James transferred the title of the middle of the three subdivided blocks to his only son, William. Back in the late 1960’s, early 1970’s, the area was vastly different than it is today. Travelling to school entailed a car trip to Hargraves then bus to Mudgee which would have been a 2 hour round trip! The area was far more isolated as there was no power and entailed an overland phone line, which had to be regularly repaired if residents wanted to be able to communicate with the outside world. The site allows mainly for camping and relaxing although there are numerous dirt roads to explore, Mudgee wineries close by and Burrendong Dam not far away (accessible via Hill End Road near Erudgere). Hargraves is also known for it's alluvial gold deposits and fossickers still go there regularly to check out Louisa Creek. There is 15km's of dirt road which needs to be traveled to reach the property. Dependent on weather, and if it has been graded recently, this road can be in varying states of repair. In heavy rain it may be difficult to get 2WD access via the public road due to the clay content in the road . Kangaroo, wallaby, owl species, kookaburra, echidna, snakes, various lizards, including shinglebacks, are often seen on these roads and the property.Home base is where the water, power and facilities are situated. There is a large roof area which can be utilised for tents in bad weather. It is also fenced. There is a large fridge which has been converted into a book library, a small cabinet with some items which may be useful during your stay and a small fridge available for use if necessary. The old forge is the best place of have a controlled fire with plenty of timber fall available for gathering at your convenience.

It is up to you to check fences upon arrival and determine whether your pet needs to be on or off leash. There are a couple of contained areas where you pets can be placed. Dog owners need to pick up dog poo for anything within the house yard! Horse owners are welcome, same conditions as above apply.

Bins available
Compost bin, trash bin. There will be bins available for you to put your rubbish in while there but you are asked to take it with you when you leave. There is a free Waste Transfer Station (tip) on Alexander Street, Hargraves. Some may be available but not guaranteed.

Great bush block
26 ft travel trailer · Group trip
The hot showers, shelter, fridge and furniture were a real plus. Plenty of fallen firewood to keep you toasty around the furnace. One neighbour is within eye-sight but we didn't really notice them at all.

It wasn't as private as we expected. Quite close to the neighbours and we could hear their dogs barking. The site felt quite unsafe, there was metal flashing around the fireplace that you could easily trip on and seriously injury yourself. I would not stay here again, not the nice bush escape we expected. Beware!!!

Great camping spot!
Tent
Home base was a great spot for a getaway. The hot showers and Forge for a fire kept us warm during the cold. The spot is peaceful and a short drive from Mudgee if you need supplies.

We had a great time camping at Home Base. It’s very quiet and peaceful with lots of animals to see and plenty of bush land. Firewood is plentiful and the Forge is great for camp fire cooking and keeping warm on the colder nights. The undercover area is great from protecting you from the elements and the added toilet and shower make it comfortable. If your looking for somewhere to unwind and relax this is it. Added bonus is there’s a little shop not far at Hargraves if you need any groceries and the service is great. Sonya is a great host and we recommend staying here and would gladly stay again.
