The best camping near Freycinet National Park

Boasting some of Tasmania’s most idyllic coastal wilderness, Freycinet National Park is one of the island’s most visited parks. Wineglass Bay is the headline act, with its white-sand beach and crystalline waters, but you can also hike the rugged sea cliffs and granite mountains, snorkel and surf at sandy beaches, or paddle between rocky coves in a sea kayak. Campers will be in their element at the park, whether you want to park your motorhome at a beachside campground, pitch a tent in the sand dunes, or backpack to a secluded beach campsite.

• Best for hikers: Freycinet overnight walker campsites provide free tent-only sites with composting toilets at Wineglass Bay, Hazards, and Cooks beaches.
• Best for RVs: Richardsons Beach Campground has powered and unpowered sites by the beach and in the sand dunes.
• Best for beach camping: Friendly Beaches campground has basic tent and RV sites with pit toilets, right on the beach.

1. Walk-in and Friendly Beaches campsites are available on a first-in, first-served basis only, and there is no camping fee. 
2. Campsites at Richardsons Beach, Honeymoon Bay, and Ranger Creek can be booked through the Visitor Centre. Sites fill up quickly, so book at least one month in advance or three months for weekend bookings.
3. Richardsons Beach, Honeymoon Bay, and Ranger Creek campsites are allocated by ballot for the summer season (18 December – 10 February). The ballot takes place in early August—contact the Visitor Centre to enter.

Tasmania’s east coast enjoys some of the mildest and driest temperatures on the island, making it a good choice for hiking and camping year-round. Summertime brings the crowds, but it’s also the best time for swimming and water sports at the park’s beaches, while spring and autumn provide the ideal weather for exploring. Winter nights can be nippy, but this is also whale-watching season along the coast.

• The closest town to Freycinet National Park is Coles Bay, where you’ll find a gas station, supermarket, and other amenities.
• Facilities within the park include a Visitor Centre, restrooms, and picnic areas. There is a complete fire ban throughout the park, but gas and fuel stoves may be used.
• Park passes are required for all visitors to Tasmania's national parks.
• Cell phone and internet coverage within the park is patchy.
