Weekend Trip to Penn Meadow Farm

The campsite is set in beautiful surroundings, right in the middle of nowhere! The area is stunning and has lots of great walks nearby that our dogs loved. The campsite is in a quiet area, great for when you want to escape for a tranquil weekend! The hill is a little steep, which may be tricky for people with mobility issues, but otherwise it is wonderful. The farm has a few animals which our kids loved visiting, and several red kites were proudly flying over throughout the day; this is a great place for nature lovers. The toilet and shower facilities need a little TLC, but everything works fine. I avoided the portaloos though, not my cup of tea. We will definitely visit again, it is such a lovely spot hidden away in a truly beautiful spot.

We spent two nights in a lovely spot by the woods and river, so quiet and peaceful. Tucked away from everything and everyone, just what we wanted! Martin is so friendly and very accomodating, we will definitelty be back soon.

We had a lovely couple of evenings. It’s very peaceful with a friendly horse nearby and a gentle stream. Near enough to town to nip in for supply’s, but far away enough to enjoy the peace and watch the stars. We’d love to come back.

There were many things we really enjoyed about Peter and Celia's land Peaceful, spacious and very helpful hosts The first place we camped in didn't work for us so in the morning Peter straightaway moved the sheep so we could be in a field much further away from the farm and livestock This second camping site was worked very well for us and 4 of our dogs Unfortunately we had misunderstood the description and we believed that each area was totally enclosed and secure which is not quite the case We had chosen to go there as our 5th dog is totally deaf but being large and young he loves to run freely This is only possible when there is a totally secure perimeter and unfortunately this was not the case We would urge anyone who is thinking of camping here with dogs to contact Peter first and discuss with him .Peter is able to accommodate many things and much better to sort it out before arriving Peter is planning to secure one area with stock fencing and when this is completed we will be straight back as the location is fantastic!

We had an absolutely lovely stay here. We were incredibly lucky with the weather which only added to a fabulous location. George, the horse mugged us for polos 😊 A great spot to get away from things and chill next to the stream. Dave was a great host and made sure every thing was ok.

Great location - right next to Brecon town centre! But also very wild! David was a great host and very friendly. I don’t recommend driving to your pitch as my 4x4 got stuck (which David helped me recover!). Great woods surrounding with a lovely stream. We had the place to ourselves and it was so tranquil. Plenty of flat space at the bottom of both fields and even in the woods if you wish. Everything for a camp fire is provided (stones and wood) but I’d recommend bringing your own dried logs if it’s been raining as they are stored outside. We can’t wait to return when it’s a little warmer!

It’s as close to a wild camping experience as you’ll get. For £12 a night per person it’s an absolute bargain. Lovely site. The owner is really nice chap. We’ve been twice and we will be going every year until we can’t.

Penn Meadow Farm is a beautiful 145 acre, family farm, nestled perfectly into the Chiltern Hills area of outstanding natural beauty. We’re just a 5 minute walk across our grassy fields to the oldest free-house pub in England (The Royal Standard of England) Say hello to our resident alpacas, sheep, pigs, pigmy goats, flock of 250 sheep and of course our lovely boarder collies. We aim to be a very relaxed spot to be able to rest for a few nights and maybe enjoying a nice camp fire in the evening. The site includes; Showers and Toilet block with toilet paper stocked. Open family pitches for you to choose where you want to set up Running drinking water Shared open kitchen Fires allowed BBQ's allowed To ensure everyone’s enjoyment and safety, please follow these rules: Supervise children: Always supervise your children and ensure they do not wander off alone. Clean up after yourself: Dispose of all waste properly in the designated bins and leave no trace behind. Wash any items you use and return them to where you found them. Respect other campers: Be courteous to fellow campers and respect their privacy and space. Pets: If you bring pets, ensure they are well-behaved, kept on a leash or have impeccable recall, and cleaned up after. Do not allow your pet to enter another camper's space. Quiet time: Maintain quiet hours between 11pm and 7am. All music must stop by 10pm, and noise should be minimal after 11pm. Campfires: Penn Meadow Farm allows fires; please use existing scorched areas if possible rather than creating new ones. Never leave any fires unattended and ensure they are completely extinguished when finished. Wipe your feet prior to entering the Bell tents to remove any coal that may have become attached. Cars/vehicles: Cars and vehicles can be on the field but should move minimally and always under 5mph. Car stereos should not be used for music entertainment. Drugs and Alcohol: Drug use is prohibited, and violators will be asked to leave. Consume alcohol responsibly, and do not drive or move your vehicle after consuming alcohol. We do not typically book Large non-family groups unless they are seeking a calm and peaceful stay. These groups must have authorization prior to the visit.

Overview

Towering beech trees, ancient oaks, and twisted roots provide a dramatic backdrop for woodland walks in Savernake Forest. Enjoy nature walks or leisurely bike rides along the tree-lined trails, venture off-road to explore the wooded glades, then find a shady picnic spot beneath the trees. Highlights include Capability Brown’s Grand Avenue, the bluebell woods at Little Frith, and the Big Bellied Oak, one of the country’s oldest trees. There’s no camping in the forest itself, but there is a campsite right by the northern entrance, where you can pitch your tent or park your caravan within strolling distance of the forest trails.

When to go

These woodlands are photo-ready at any time of year. Visit in spring when bluebells and wildflowers blanket the forest floor, or in fall when the autumn leaves transform the trees into a sea of red, yellow, and orange. Summer (July-Aug) weekends can get busy—make an early start to avoid the crowds and snag a picnic bench. The trails can get muddy when it rains, so wellies or hiking boots are a good idea.

Know before you go

Savernake Forest is located about a 10-minute drive south of Marlborough along the A346. The main entrance is at Postern Hill at the northwest end of the park, where free parking is available.
There is no entrance fee to visit the forest.
The forest has picnic and barbecue areas, and restrooms (open from Easter through October only). There are no other facilities within the park, so bring everything you need with you.
There are some paved paths in the forest that are accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
