Get into low gear and enjoy the slow pace and peace of our little working farm on the edge of the hill country. Low Gear Farmstead's 75 acres border the lovely San Saba River, providing campers the opportunity to swim, wade, fish and paddle. Farm animals including dairy goats, chickens, and horses inhabit the property, but wildlife such as deer, wild turkey, ringtail, fox and armadillo is also abundant. Bird watchers will be delighted at the diversity of birds, especially in spring. Don't forget to look up at night as our dark skies provide excellent stargazing on clear nights and a very visible Milky Way. We limit the number of campsites and spread them out so that campers may enjoy privacy and seclusion. Campsites are provided with compost toilets and most sites also have a fire ring. 4WD is not required unless we have had heavy rains, otherwise most vehicles, except very low clearance ones, do fine. The nearest town, Menard, is about a 12 minute drive from the property and has a grocery store, gas stations, a couple restaurants, a pub and a bakery. Lovers of history might enjoy visiting the Presidio de San Saba, about 20 minutes from the farm, as well as the historic Pioneers Rest Cemetery in town. Low Gear Farmstead is a safe, welcoming space for queers and POC.

Great place !! Wife and i got the Skyview spot and the stars at night were amazing ! Sadly it was super windy that day so there were loads of dust blowing from the spot. Super primitive spots , with outhouse and besr part it was right next to the river ! Cold and enjoyable! They have aome farm animals along with doggies that passed by to say hi .

This was such a nice place! Beautiful land. Hosts were very friendly and helpful. My car battery died and they kindly came to our site and jumped us. Their sweet dog also came and hung out with us for the evening!! Would definitely come back and definitely recommend to others!

Our home in nature!

We love staying at Lowgear. The river offers cool fun, fishing, boating, swimming. Lots of areas to investigate and enjoy birdwatching walks. Friendly helpful host, Logan and Gear will make you very welcome and share their local knowledge. Menard has a public pool open in summer and Menard Station offers cheap ice, water and coffee for a donation. A great place to unwind.

Camping by the river!
Tent · With kids ·
Camping at the Lowgear Farmstead was super peaceful! The campsite Orchard Falls was very nice and secluded there is a river that runs right near the site and the waterfall will literally put you to sleep with how peaceful it sounds. Directions to the property were very easy to get to and the owner was very nice and responsive. As long as you respect their property they'll respect you and you can have all the peace and quiet you want. There is an outhouse available if you need. They have a very nice pup that showed up to our campsite in the morning while we were making breakfast we gave him a few sausages and he hung around with us for a little while! 😁 He even walked us out when we left! Will come back!
