Bentsen-Rio Grande Primitive Campground

A little exercise will be required to reach these primitive campgrounds located about ¾ of a mile from the parking lot and 10 football fields away from the restrooms and showers.

There are 10 sites total that share three fire rings so you can make some new friends as you snuggle up by the campfire. Hike your tent in (tent-only) and your trash out as you explore variety of vegetation and wildlife that the park has to offer.

Overview

Biking

The Bensten-Rio Grande Valley State Park Store "Algunas Plumas" offers a variety of camping supplies, outdoor equipment, field guides, gifts and food items. The store also rents bicycles out for day use. They have regular, children's and trike sizes for $5 to $12 per day. There are three biking trails throughout the park for you to explore around! To protect the integrity of the park, cars are not allowed to drive within the park lines, leaving the biking and hiking trails open and safe for everyone.

Boating

Just a two minute walk outside the state park is the Bentsen Palm Village RV Resort. There are lots of activities you can do for the day including pontoon boat tours!

Fishing

At the Bensten-Rio Grande Valley State Park there is one designated fishing area overlooking the La Parida Banco.

Hiking

There are two hiking trails within the state park—the Rio Grande Trail and the Resaca Vieja Trail. Both of the trails are around 1.5 miles long and are great for easy walking and bird watching.

Wildlife watching

Did you know that the Bensten-Rio Grande Valley State Park is part of the World Birding Center? Pretty neat! This state park is a world-class destination for bird-watching. With more than 525 documented species in the area, the park has an impressive list of 358 species in the park’s boundaries. Check out the Hawk Tower in the spring and fall, where you’ll have a chance to see migratory birds including flocks of thousands of hawks. There are species such as the Green Jay, the Buff-bellied Hummingbird to the Great Kiskadee and the Altamira Oriole that you can’t find anywhere else in the country. The park store offers binocular rentals for day use if needed.
