Overview

A port city about two hours south of Oregon, Eureka is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and Redwood forests, offering an abundance of outdoor activity. Inland, Six Rivers National Forest has nearly a million acres of wilderness for fishing and hiking, while on the coast, Sue-meg State Park features tide pools and a chance to spot seals off the rocky shore. There are two nearby parks for exploring the redwoods—Humboldt Redwoods State Park south of town and Redwood National and State Parks to the north—but you can also find them in Eureka at Sequoia Park. To get out on the water, rent a kayak or hop on a harbor cruise. Several RV parks sit along Highway 101 as it passes through town. Most have hookups and some amenities, but state park campgrounds may not. Expect chilly and often wet weather much of the year on this part of the California coast.
