CedarRose Farm

4 sites · RVs, Tents52 acres · MT
CedarRose Farm is a fantastic former produce farm that we operated for 21 years, surrounded by other friendly smallholdings, art studios and homesteaders. A clean portapotty is on site starting May 3rd through September 15th. We offer campfire popcorn poppers, complete with kernels, oil and butter! S'Mores kits and toasting forks, with enough goodies for 8 S'mores. Check out our 'Extras' and relax and enjoy yourself! Please ask us about visiting us on the farm, we have a shady outdoor dining room you're welcome to enjoy. Ask for directions to "Sunset Point", its a quick hike to a secret campfire ring with perfect lounge chairs and amazing views! There's always something to do, horses to feed and brush, chickens and ducks that need feed and watched by the pond. Stargazing and birdwatching are great here, its very dark at night, almost no light pollution, and I've counted 43 different birds! We love biking, hiking, paddle boarding and having campers! We know you'll love it as much as we do!

Ponderosa Pine Ranch camp

1 site · RV, Tent3 acres · Three Forks, MT
Learn more about this land: Our property is in a close proximity to the Fairweather Fishing access on the Missouri River. Camping is not allowed at the access so we would be the closest camping site to this great outdoor playground. There is opportunity for fishing, floating, boating, hunting and swimming in the summer . There are groves of mature trees and open sites available. This is directly off of paved county road. The property adjacent to ours has the original ranch house and barn and other outbuildings that were part of the Ponderosa Pine Ranch which owned most of the valley we're in. The ranch house and buildings were divided away from our part of the property several years ago, so we have our home here and what was mostly pasture. The campsites are all pasture grass with trees for shade. We do not have cell phone service here. We have one site that has 30 amp electricity. Also we do not have trash service .

MT Keene Life is Good Lodge

1 site · Lodging10 acres · Craig, MT
Wade the Dearborn in the back yard of this 3-bedroom house (fourth bedroom/living room or guide cabin next door ($150/stay to open) on 10 acres of the former Gary Cooper Ranch. Don’t be surprised to see deer, geese and ducks in the window nudging their way near the deck, especially at the spring waterfall that cascades down the slope. if you are especially quiet and observant, the hundreds of acres of park and ranch across the river also have mountain goats, bears, antelope and even the mountain lion. Help yourself to the library, watch satellite television or DVD movies, or read from the house’s library. The public put-in is an 11 hour trip; private access to two shorter put-ins make this a recommended site for many Montana guides. Launch from the back yard and float one half mile down the Dearborn River to the Missouri River or from anywhere on the Dearborn to your own private fishing hole among some of nature’s oldest rock outcroppings. Only few miles from the Missouri Inn over the bridge where the Untouchables was filmed, enjoy the canyon or visit the Lewis and Clark’s Tower Rock and surrounding Park. From this base, see the spectacular Glacier Park or the continent’s largest dinosaur digs to the northwest, float the Lewis and Clark Trail by pontoon boat and lunch at the island where one of the nation's most famous fires occurred, or travel south to Yellowstone National Park or Jackson Hole, each an easy day’s visit. Bring your dogs to the kennel behind the house, hang on the deck with river and tremendous rock views, play pool or light the outside fire pit for a campfire. BBQ or enjoy the new, custom kitchen and fisherman’s décor. In the evening, take your pick of 3 spacious bedrooms where at the end of the day 6 extra long beds await or tie a few at the fly-tying table.

Camping near Helena with horseback riding guide

Overview

Helena is all about the outdoors. Just minutes from the downtown coffee shops and craft breweries, the surrounding valley features hills and mountains rising in every direction. The mighty Missouri River corridor provides endless boating, fishing, and paddling in a number of reservoirs and the river itself, plus three local lakes. With hundreds of miles of hiking trails, mountain biking, and access to both the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest and BLM lands, it’s hard to not fall in love with the area, where campgrounds, RV parks, and regional parks are prolific. If Helena campgrounds are full, try the parks in Townsend to the south.

Where to go

Hauser Reservoir

Just 15 minutes from downtown, Hauser Reservoir has a long lakeshore with developed boat ramps, bathrooms, and campsites. This reservoir is the first in a string of three major impoundments, each with excellent fishing and boating opportunities—trout and walleye fishing are popular on the lakes and on the Missouri River below Hauser Dam. Canyon Ferry Reservoir and Holter Reservoir are the subsequent downstream reservoirs, and all three combine to create a major corridor of water recreation and camping. You can even find reservable, boat-access-only campgrounds.

Craig

Craig is the trout capital of Montana, home to the Missouri River’s fabled waters perfect for fly fishing. So many trout feed here due to the cold water spilling from Holter Dam and the huge insect populations that hatch on the water’s surface. Shoreline access points are common, and numerous boat ramps allow access for drift boats and rafts from the dam to the town of Cascade.

Gates of the Mountains

Just outside of Helena, take a boat ride at Gates of the Mountains to experience area scenery while learning about the trials of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Boat tours operate during summer, with several large vessels featuring both open-air seating and covered areas. Riders can see the river constrict between great canyon walls while keeping an eye out for mountain goats and other wildlife on the cliff faces.

Canyon Ferry Reservoir

When it comes to water sports, the Canyon Ferry Reservoir is the place to be. From the campgrounds along the shore, you can paddle, boat, fish, and swim. To the north, Black Sandy State Park offers expansive water and mountain views, while the BLM-run White Sandy area features 32 campsites.

Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest

For shaded mountain campsites and remote adventure, head for this national forest. Sleep next to a creek under towering sequoias at Tenmile, or hit the Continental Divide Trail from your tent camping site at Moose Creek.

When to go

Helena is a year-round destination with plenty of summer and winter activities, though campers will find the most conducive weather conditions in summer from June through October—perfect for mountain biking and paddle boarding. The city’s location near Glacier National Park, a destination busiest in summer, means campsites book up quickly for the summer months around Helena too. Fall and spring offer cool, quiet hikes, while winter visitors should consider an RV site with hookups or a cabin rental with heating due to cold, snowy weather. Get outside for cross-country skiing, ice fishing, and snowshoeing.
