Discover the most magical spots to pitch your tent or park your rig on your next Beacon Rock State Park adventure.
Hike, camp, and climb at The Rock.
The 848-foot-tall Beacon Rock boasts a number of claims to fame. Named by the Lewis and Clark Expedition, it’s the largest free-standing monolith in the US, a mecca for rock climbers, and was once the core of an ancient volcano. Most importantly, it’s the grand centerpiece of the Beacon Rock State Park, surrounded by 26 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails. Follow the Beacon Rock Trail through 52 switchbacks to the top, enjoy technical rock climbing at the Rock, or admire the views as you boat or fish along the Columbia River below.
Although Beacon Rocks is open for day use year-round, camping is only possible from April 1 through October 31. Come in spring and early summer to admire the seasonal wildflowers or in fall to admire the colorful foliage along the trails. Note that the south and southeast faces of Beacon Rock are closed to climbers between Feb 1 and mid-July.
