Camping at this site comes with a mix of charm and quirks. Many campers appreciate the open, private space provided by the meadow, which is a rarity in this part of Virginia, especially for those with dogs. However, the experience is occasionally interrupted by nearby freight trains and a constant generator hum that some might find bothersome. Despite this, the host Will is frequently praised for being accommodating and resourceful, often providing firewood and making campers feel welcome.
I know itβs in the middle of a town, but once youβre in the field it truly doesnβt feel that way! We love to let our dogs run when we camp and it was hard to find a place closer to Richmond rather than going toward Harrisonburg which is what we normally do. An hour from Richmond and we had exactly what we needed: space! The field is really beautiful and the way the sun sets was magical. We had a large group and we were able to spread out and feel totally at peace. When you first drive in youβre like βis this right?β Which is probably what any negative reviews talks about, but the field opens up and itβs beautiful!! We had an amazing time and would absolutely come back! Especially to try the brewery and barbecue that everyone talks about!
We did our version of primitive tent camping here in the open space of the hayfield. We loved the privacy you cannot get in any campground and the price is much more fair than any primitive site near Shenandoah National Park that we could find this week. If you love trains, youβll enjoy the occasional freight trains that pass right behind the hayfield.
Our dog Cooper had so much fun exploring. We had 3 deer sightings and lots of birds singing. And the breeze and wildflowers! Will is an excellent host and a groovy camp guest with treats for our boy!
