It is accessible by a long hilly hike in or (preferably) by paddling across the reservoir
This is easily my favorite place to camp in NJ. The hike to the campsites is about 2-3 miles and is not easy when you have to carry all of your gear. I highly recommend kayaking or taking a boat to get to the sites, it is much easier this way and lets you bring some extra stuff. Avoid the center of the reservoir if possible, a lot of people to drown here and the waters can get surprisingly rough. The campsites are perfect; most have access to the beach and are secluded from people so you can do as you please. Definitely worth having a first aid kit handy as well since you are pretty far away from any help.
Beautiful park. Park and campground can get busy on weekends in season, especially on the 4th of July. Because the campground is only accessed by boat, on foot or by bike you can almost always get a site even last minute however water front sites book up in advance during the season. If you plan to boat in you will need to show a valid fishing, launch or boat ramp maintenance permit to get into the boat launch area on weekends in season. Be mindful of water conditions. They change fast. Wind picks up quickly and can be strong. Wear a life vest. The hike in to the campground is nice. The first campsites start around 3-4 miles with the furthest campsite about six miles in. The far campsites are the least used.
