Settled by Thomas James Lynch in the mid to late 1800's, the Lynch Ranch originally ran sheep along Tierra Redonda Mountain. It transitioned into a cattle ranch in the early 1900's when Archie Smith married into the Lynch family.  The Smith family continues to raise cattle on the ranch and enjoys all that the Smith Ranch has to offer.  Learn more about this land: Spend a night on a working cattle ranch with history dating back to the late 1800's. Once the original Lynch Ranch, the Smith Ranch offers a primative, dry camp with easy access down a dirt road and plenty of privacy. Tucked back in the Oak trees, you'll have views of Tierra Redonda mountain and the Coast range. (Cow camp is just over the hill from Hearst Castle but takes an hour and a half to drive to the coast and San Simeon.) The ranch also offers some of the best star gazing this side of the Sierras!Cow Camp (site 1) is our original site. It has plenty of space for multiple families and RV's. We hung lights here for our son's 18th birthday party last year. They can be plugged into a portable generator and lights up a nice common space. There's also a few trees close by to hang a hammock or two.

Cow Camp offers a truly unique experience with its expansive ranch setting, where privacy and safety are prioritized for guests. The presence of grazing cattle and the open space make it ideal for relaxation and exploration, particularly for those traveling with dogs. Guests consistently praise the hosts, Bandy and Rosalie, for their responsiveness and hospitality, enhancing the overall stay. While the setting is quiet and secluded, some visitors have noted the occasional road noise and spotty cell service, which could be a consideration for those needing constant connectivity.

This was such a gorgeous ranch and I loved the privacy and safety offered. The Cow Camp was perfect and we got to relax and watch the cows graze during breakfast and dinner. My dogs were tethered by a 50ft leash and anchored to the ground, my dogs absolutely loved the open space and ability to explore safely also. Feeding the horses was a great experience also I loved talking to the family about their animals, land, and hobbies.
